I have a avi clip and when I open up WMP at the bottom is says opening media then error downloading codecs and the video plays but with no sound.
I thought it was just a dodgy file but it happened to a couple more clips that I got a few weeks ago which I know had sound.

Is this a media player of file problem because I wanted to burn it to a vcd so im not bothered about watching it on my laptop?

any ideas on what I can do to get the codecs or whatever?

ps. the clip is from limewire and im using WMP 8

Drop the video into Gspot 2.60 and see what codec it needs. Then you should be able to find it in 'Tools' to the left. Alternately, download VLC Media Player and see if it works. If so, it probably is a codec problem. VLC uses it's own codecs.

It's hard sometimes to figure out what WMP is doing. The video and audio should play back with no problems. MP3 audio codecs should already be installed as part of the system. Did you try VLC? I'm guessing it will work, unless the video itself is damaged. I don't use WMP, so I'm not much help with it.

With Gspot, you can use the bottom part of the page for 'Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests' and see what your computer is doing to try to play the file, both the video and audio part. That part can get a little complex if you have more than one audio codec that can render the audio or video. With the video, it may be using a Divx codec instead of the Xvid one, that might explain why it says the codec is not there, but still plays.

Since it plays fine, then the file appears to be intact. Whether or not it works after conversion will depend on the tools used.

Hey, I'm new on this forum and so far have been unable to get a post out - so if anyone gets this, please let hear back.

I have downloaded Media Player Classic onto my Windows 7 laptop (high end thing!) and get NO sound on any playback with Media Player.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
