  1. System: Home Built AMD Athlon XP 2400 on ECS K7YTA3 with latest v80E bios. 512MB memory and three HDD (120GB, 80GB & 20GB).

The Emprex was running the A07M firmware. Anytime I put in a blank CDR or a DVD-R, Nero Infotool shows that it will only write at half the speed capable of the drive. Such as, it will write a CDR at 48x, but Nero 6 and Roxio 6 both say it will only write at 24x... Nero Infotool shows this also. When I put a TDK or GC blank 8x DVD-R in the drive, although the drive will burn up to 16x both Nero 6 and Roxio 6 both say it will only burn at 4x, half the disc speed.

I downloaded the latest A07R firmware and it didn't make any change, it still would only burn at half speed. I returned the drive and got another one in case there was a problem with the first one, but the second one has the same issue.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Check to make sure DMA is enabled for the drive.

I have a BTC DRW1016IM and it burns at the correct rated speed. I would say the problem is in your setup.

  4. Interesting fact is, I can put the old Pinnicle I had back in and it burns a CDR at 42x.
