I was wondering how i can tell exactly what kind of dvd writer i have. It has recently started having problems, but when i use my PC Wizard to find out what type it is, all it says is that it's a Generic DVD RW 4XMax. I was wondering how i can find out more info on this dvd rw. I've had it for a couple of years now, and it just started to fail to load blank dvd's.

Download AIDA - it will tell you everything about the components and software within your computer and will also provide links to all hardaware manufacturers.

I downloaded the AIDA32, but it's not that much help. As a matter of fact, acording to AIDA, my DVD RW is just a cd-rom..... that can't be right. I am at my wits end with this entire machine. I feel as if i am loosing my mind. All i want is for the dvd writer to reconize that it has a blank dvd in it.... must be too much to ask.

For what it is worth my I/O Magic burner only shows as a generic dvd r/w.
Makes it hard to look for firmware updates.

Your other post about it not reconizeing media is locked. you don't say if you have made any changes to your setup.

I recently upgraded my old nec 1300a burner with a nec 3520 and could not get it to reconize any media. Compaq support went as far as replacing the motherboard but no fix. It was installed on the same ide with a dvd reader with bios set to auto as well as xp for dma if available. In frustration I removed the reader and then the new burner worked just fine. I don't know the techical reasons but I replaced the reader with another nec 3520 burner and the system and both burners are now happy.

You can knock Dell or any other vender but if they offer to replace components what more can you ask of them.

I have not made any changes to my system prior to this problem. In total frustration, i formatted my HD and re-installed everything once again in a vain hope of fixing this problem..... it didn't work. I am running Win98 well 20gb hd. Like i said before, everything was just fine till a couple of days ago. I finally wrote to I/O magic....... found out that is the brand of my writer...... but i haven't heard back from them. Let me know if there is anymore info that you need. All help is appreciated.
