    my brother has just got an iriver h320 and he said that the video playback requires the video to be:

    File format: AVI
    Codec: XviD MPEG4 (recommend XviD 1.0.2 codec)
    Resolution: 220 x 176 only
    Frame Rate: 10fps at Maximum
    Bit Rate: 500Kbps at Maximum(recommend under 450Kbps)


    is there a program out there that will convert almost every video file type, vob, mpeg, avi etc to this required spec?

    You will most likely end up with several programs. Take a look in the "How To" section under "convert"

    It has a hard limit on max bitrate yet they recommend v1.0.2? I would suggest a 1.1.x build so you can make use of VBV. although there is no setting for 450-500k.

    For a single app probably mencoder. It can convert just about anything and output XviD avi's.
