Now i have all neccesary codecs to play an Xvid but i am wondering how do i know how the xvid is coded because my Philips DVP 642 cannot play all xvids and when i do burn some i get boxes with different colours rather than a full picture, is this because my divx player cannot play it.

And if i did want to play them onto that DVD player would i have to conver them or reencode them?

Do you suggest a video conversion or re-encode with Dr divx?

    Thanks in advance

  2. The tool you need is Mpeg4Modifier.

Yeah you will get playback issues with SOME XviD movies on ESS Chipset based Divx Players.

Yeah Mpeg4 modifier will help alternatively get the Pioneer DV-575

Best player out there with the latest MTK Chipset.

The blockiness i think is the quant matrix used.

But using an MTK based player will solve the issue.

Or you could reencode xvid to xvid again using Virtual Dub. Just drop the movie in.
    Audio>full processing mode
    Audio>compression>Mpeg Layer 3. choose 56 on right.
    Video>Compression>XviD MPEG-4 codec or something.
    File>Save as AVI.

You will then have an XviD that will work on the player but then you might get other issues like slow motion picture therefore i think XviD 1.0 you didnt get films in slow motion.
Also you might wanna take off the first frame of the movie in virtual dub because you get issuesl ike that bframe decoder lag thing on the first frame of the movie after loading it in virtual dub.

    Cheers.

    THanks for your replies.

:edit: when trying to run MPEG4Modifer.exe i get

    Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). CLick OK to terminate the application

  7. Well, have no idea. But I think it should be straightforward to remove let say packed bitstreams. For Qpel or GMC, hmm, I am not sure. Maybe it is not bad idea to read the readme file if it exist, or even the user comments. Oh, yes read a bit the site for download, there should be some info.

GMC and qpel removal requires re-encoding.

The lag frame is generated by the encoder, it isn't actually part of the stream.

I wouldn't say that it is useless, far from it. It is a very usefull app, just not if you want to remove GMC/qpel.

so the only way to remove the qpel and GMC (codec) is via Dr.Divx or converting Xvid to Divx ?

And if so is there any application that can tell me if its using the qpel or GMC codec so that i dont burn it to dvdrw but convert it rite away?

    Thanks for your responses.

No. You simply need to convert to MPEG4 that doesn't use qpel/GMC. It doesn't have to be DivX. Could be XviD, libavcodec, Nero Digital, 3ivX or whatever.

Interestingly enough MPEG4Modfiier tells you if a file uses GMC or qpel. Also tells you the real number of warp points used by the GMC. Reason this can be usefull is that DivX always reports 2 in the vol, but only uses one and Nero can sometimes report 2 but use one.

Problem with MPEG4Modifier is that you have to wait for it to scan the entire file. Quickest way would be to use Sigma's avicheck util. As the chipset that they designed it to work with didn't support GMC or qpel either you get a warning popup if a file uses GMC or qpel.

  14. The newer DVP642's are firmware upgradable, so if you haven't upgraded to the current firmware version than this may fix your problems.

Try here for info - type in DVP642 for the model search:

    http://www.usasupport.philips.com/productSelector.html

Be sure your model is an exact match for the firmware (642/17 vs. 642/37, though they both appear to have the same firmware).

Be aware that updating firmware incorrectly can permanently damage your hardware.

I have this exact model DVD player, and with the current firmware it plays every Xvid file I throw at it with no issues whatsoever.

    Good luck,

    W
