Philips 642

I just bought a Philips 642 DVD Player mostly because people on this forum talk about this player playing everything except a peanut butter sandwich. It seems to play my +r but the –r I have (Maxell MXL RG02) will not play. It simply ejects them. The only things I really want from a DVD player is to play pressed DVDs , DVD +r/ +rw and DVD –r/-rw and CDs. Don’t really care about anything else. Wal Mart also had a Sony 575 for about the same price and it said on the box it would play all of those. Would this one or another one is the same price range be better. I have been to the DVD Player list and checked the boxes for the criteria above and got 1560 matches. Help!

IMO most buy it because it will play Xvid and Divx,It never gave me any problem with any brand of DVD-r

Buy the Sony 575 @ Wally world.
My Sony plays want you want just fine.

Well, as others will tell you, it WILL play DVD-R, and just about every other format, including DIVX. You should try your Maxell DVD-R on another player to make sure, AND try a different DVD-R with the 642. But if it really doesn't play on your 642, then it's a disc problem.

I love my 642... DIVX looks good on it.

I use DVD-r's and the dvp642 has no problem with them.
Another important thing to consider about the Philips vs. the Sony is that you can easily change the Philips to multi-region so that you can play DVD's from all over the world. Sony models are almost impossible to change the region settings.

I agree. The problem has to be with the -R.

Update. I took the Philips back and bought the Sony 575. Not only will it play the Maxell –r the Philips wouldn’t play, it will also play a Maxell +r that seems to have some sort of unknown problem. It would not play in 3 other players (including the Philips, a Toshiba, and a Sanyo) and the Sony plays it without a hitch. Obviously other people have not had the problems with the –r that I did, but it is worth noting that Philips does not list –r as compatible with the 642. So far I am very happy with the Sony.
