  1. I have looked at several guides on this topic, and tried downloading and using VirtualDub MP3 Freeze, but when I attempt a Direct Stream Copy and appending my two AVI files, I get the following error:

    The audio streams have different data formats

    Does this mean I have to full reprocess, or something else? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Try to use AVIMUXGUI. When I get that error in virtualdub I always use this program and does a great job!
    ..thoughts arrive like butterflies..

    If your ultimate goal is to convert the joined AVI to MPEG for making either a VCD or DVD with then proceed as follows:

    Demux the audio out of both avis with whatever method you most prefer. I like Goldwave myself but VirtualDub will do it for you as well or a multitude of other applications;

    Join the audio streams together with WavCat or similar;

    Convert the two avis separately with your encoder/settings of choice;

    Join the resulting MPEGs together with Womble MPEG-VCR;

    Remux the audio back together with the MPEG elementary stream you got from Womble.

    Voila, you now have a perfectly joined MPEG for burning to disc with no join noise in the audio stream at the cut.

    I have in the past joined the first half of a movie in NTSC encoded with DivX v3 and with MP3 sound to the second half from a PAL source encoded with XviD and AC3 sound using this method. It joined perfectly and you could not tell where the cut was in the end result. You might have to play with the audio levels a bit as well to maintain a seemless sound level at the cut.

    It helps if you have an overlap of video at the cut as well of course. Luckily I did.

    Don't join at all. Just encode each AVI to DVD mpg specs, author as 2 parts of the same title.

    On my DVD player at least that results in a very slight pause during playback as it shifts from one title to the next.

    Yes, others have reported that too, even if I can't say I've noticed any pause. The rumored cure is to remove the chapter point TDA by default sets at the join.
    Either way, I prefer a slight pause to the work and problems that joining the source material involves.
