  1. after capturing from DV Camcorder, the file, when opened, acts very irraticcally, not playing the sound, especially after fast forwarding on the scroll bar. Sometime the file won't even play, although the clock shows time elpase.
Via 4-pin firewire to pretty powerful laptop.
    Settings issue?
Any ideas appreciated. Or..where to go for this question.
    Thanks,

Tough to say but majority of issues originate from PC config and software conflicts (codecs included).
Try using smthg different like IuVCR for transfer. Same behavior will indicate playback issues, different - transfer app problem (rare). First, use a file that has been proven to work OK to determine if playback is OK. Then you will know more what possibly needs your attention. Test, play your files with only 1 app open as loading (opening) few apps at the time may be affecting your playback capabilities.

  3. If you're using Windows media player, then it's probably at fault. It sucks in general.
Get something better to view your videos.

Thanks for the replies! I will try IuVCR for capturing.
Regarding display: I viewed the Windows movie maker sample file, (WMV) and it's quality (blurry and pixel maxout) was almost as bad as a new test file i'd just captured with Win Movie Maker. This leads me to wonder if I also have a display issue within the laptop.
    Any ideas appreciated.

  5. Have you updated video drivers, and/or directX?
DX9.0c is out, and does help in most cases.

  6. Someone I know got the WinDVD suite as a bundle with a replacement mother board and didn't want it so i took it to play with. IMHO the software is crap extreme, I also had audio problems among others. It's coming of my machine and the disk is going on a long vacation. If you are capturing dv, I suggest WINDV. It has worked flawlessly for me. Nyah Levi
