I don't think this would be considered warez but I was wondering if anyone here on the forum, maybe close to Ohio, has the executable of sp1 saved or archived and would be willing to put on cd and mail to me?

I want to use my copy of xp pro to make a slipstream of xp pro w/sp1 and then one with sp2.

Or can anyone tell me the big difference between sp1 and sp1a.

Thanks if anyone is willing to send me sp1.

you can get one for free from microsoft

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

you might also check with local businesses (best buy, circuit city, office depot, etc).. they may have the discs in their stores for free

Thanks for the reply all! As in regards to downloading it, there is no link to sp1 anymore, just sp1a and sp2! I am not ready to try sp2 yet as for compatibility issues and problems I have read from other post's and forums and customers complaining to me where I work.

oh -- the reason sp1 is not available is that it had a big bug in it:

Microsoft has acknowledged and patched a glitch with its Windows XP Service Pack 1 update that can cause system slowdowns, but has not yet made its still-developing fix widely available.

Because of changes made in SP1 to Windows XP's memory management system, programs that affect large blocks of memory may take up to ten times longer to load on a system running SP1 than on one without, Microsoft said.

The company detailed the problem on its support Web site in a recently posted Knowledge Base article, "Programs Run Slower After You Install Windows XP SP-1" (article #815411).
    Bugs and Fixes

The bug affects both the Professional and Home Edition versions of Windows XP. Released in September, SP1 includes fixes for a number of security flaws and bugs discovered since Windows XP's debut.

For now, the only official way to obtain Microsoft's fix is to contact the company's Product Support Services department.

Although Microsoft charges customers for some support calls, customers requesting this patch will not be charged, according to a company spokesperson.

Because the problem is rare, Microsoft has chosen not to offer the patch for download on its support site, the spokesperson said.

Unless users are severely affected by the problem, Microsoft recommends that they wait for a broad release of the SP patch or until the next Windows XP service pack is released.

The SP1A has the virtual machine removed. You will need to visit Sun's website to download the java runtime program.

MS never really got a grip on Java as they were always trying to kill it (same with openGL)

Thanks guy's for the replies! I ended up using sp1a and just used it on a computer I got for free. Well almost free, I had to install operating system on friends new hard drive and he gave me a computer that was sitting in the garage. He said it would not boot up so I took it home, turned it on and all it did was sit at the windows ME screen. So I used my freshly slipstreamed sp1a xp pro and it booted up no problem. Been runnin for almost a week now. Man is he a dummy! Just Kidding, He is cool! But he is the type that will just buy a new one and not even try and fix the one that went bad. Now the wife is mad that I got 3 computers! Anyway thanks to all for the replies!
