I am also very pleased with the results of the update this time. I like Vista and the way things work so well on my HP laptop computer. It is fast, efficient and very convenient, not to mention stable. I believe that this bodes well for the future and that there will be an increasing number of people now moving to Vista instead of remaining with XP. Microsoft has received a lot of criticism and input related to Vist and some of it has been well deserved. I believe that with the release of SP1, the level of complaints will die down considerably.

I've been running the beta release of SP1 for several months and no problems of any sort. I haven't seen any improvements in my Vista system, but I'll try the final version and see what it does. Thanks.

EDIT: Looks like the standalone version is here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B0C7136D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D0...displaylang=en

About 434Mb for me. It may take a while to install, about an hour. The auto update version should start in April. The auto update version should start in April.

My Vista system is auto-downloading the SP1 right now and it seems very fast. It's reaching 89% within 10 minutes. I'll report back when it's up and running...Originally Posted by redwudz

A associate at work just installed SP1. Everything went smoothly however after it finished the update, his left and right monitors were switched on his dual monitor setup. Easy to correct so it was just a quirk but FYI.
-
It's done. It took less than 45 minutes to complete everything. So far so good and I'll keep my finger crossed... I'm running Vista Ultimate, by the way...

That happened to me as well at work. It was easily fixed.Originally Posted by SCDVDBelieving yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

Yes, Microsoft usually gets it right by the 2nd or 3rd time. The complaints come from the paying cutomers who are usuing what amounts to "beta software" that they paid a premium price for.

It's the standard business model for Microsoft, but others have started to use this model as well.

NOTE: I'm NOT a Microsoft hater.... just a LATE adopter... by the time I buy their stuff it's usually pretty darn good.Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
-
i installed it on an uktimate version, and have not noticed any differences, still very slow when compared to XP....

One of the top complaints about Vista is hardware compatibility, specially with 2+ year old devices. Has anyone noticed that a peripheral is now being recognized after patching with SP1? In my case my scanner (HP Scanjet 6300C) and printer (HP Photosmart P1100) lack drivers for Vista (the HP site is not offering them), and my soundcard (Voyetra Santa Cruz) also lacks Vista drivers. I had hopes in SP1 but it seems these drivers are not native either. So I'm staying with XP which I'm happy with So I'm staying with XP which I'm happy with
-
Unfortunately, an SP isn't the vehicle for providing drivers - that's up to the hardware vendors to make the decision whether it makes business sense to write new drivers for legacy hardware. It happens whenever there is a major change under the hood, e.g., Win9x to WinXP or NT4 to 2K. Drivers that are installed with Windows do so because the vendors supply them to MS for inclusion on the installation CD/DVD. Soundcards are most affected.Originally Posted by alegator

Ah that was what I was going to ask.

I almost would not do it if it wasn't a forced upgrade. My system is running just fine on the original vista oem I got last year. This was from a direct buy through office depot.

Everything is running as I want it now that I have 2gb rams and a dual core amd 2.7ghz processor.

BUt since i have autoupdate enabled I'll just wait. Now I did get a few updates the other day. Three I think. Where do I go to see If I have already gotten the sp update? Is that in that aero windows performace screen?Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
-
Well, that's what I meant anyway. Usually SP releases increase their driver database provided by the respective hardware vendors. Vista SP1 is supposed to have increased hardware compatibility to over 15000 components according to this source: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2192560,00.aspOriginally Posted by JohnnyMalaria
But HP has not and will not provide Vista drivers for the devices I mentioned before so I will not be able to use them with a Vista PC. My best solution would be to network a 2nd Vista PC to my current XP machine and share these XP peripherals.

Once the SP1 update gets installed you can verify it by going to System Information (Control Panel/System). You should now see "Windows Vista SP1" in the info screen.Originally Posted by yoda313

To a limited sub set of users. It is only available in 5 languages at the moment, and windows update checks your system for certain components known to still have issues and doesn't offer SP1 if you have these. Included in the problem list are certain Realtek audio chipsets for which there are no working drivers and a few other things. A full list can be found here : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5Originally Posted by scorps

You can download the full installer from here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d0...DisplayLang=en
but it weighs in at a hefty 485MB, whereas the Windows Update version averages 65 - 120MB depending on your system configuration.Read my blog here.

just finished installing and now i have no audio and computer cant see my wireless router. it sees the other 7 wireless routers through out the neighborhood but not the one 6 feet away that its been running on for a month. far as im concerned shit pack 1 can **** itself my whole life flashed be fore my eyes, and i wasnt even dead yet.
-
If you slow down, you will probably find that it isn't as bad as you think. I also suspect you installed from the standalone and didn't look at the requirements first, in which case the fault is yours, not SP1.

Start by uninstalling the audio card drivers and rebooting. The card should reinstall itself when Vista restarts. Once this is done, check to see if you have audio back. If so, repeat with your wireless drivers.Read my blog here.

What does it say on the Device Manager? If you can't see any Sound and Video on the right panel, but yellow question mark in stead. Just remove the yellow question mark and restart your system. Vista will detect the audio drivers and reinstall for you. Did you try to reboot the wireless router yet?Originally Posted by shititin

well gunslinger sir the problem was that while it installing the drivers the pc would crash. over and over again even after doing an uninstall and reboot. as for the yellow question mark , it was there once then after rebooting the same item no longer showed up again. and the same all went for the router. so **** it i stayed up late and reformatted and reset the router now it seems all is fine. besides now my diskcheck works again so it was inevitable i would reformat anyway. my whole life flashed be fore my eyes, and i wasnt even dead yet.
-
I suggest that you stick with something that is consistent with your skill level and arcane hardware. Windows 3.1 is probably about right for you.

I almost thought I had to do the full reformat of the system :yikes

I uninstalled the beta version and the beta text was still showing up in the bottom right of the screen. I did the full install of the beta, and the site said I'd have to do a reformat to get rid of it.

Well I did a full install of the newer version and it didn't bomb out, and it got rid of the beta text in the right corner

I was going to suggest etch-a-sketch or abacus but they would probably be "defective" and end up being thrown out the window with a string of expletives trailing behind...Originally Posted by SCDVD

Just a marketing goodwill thought for MS... with all the zillions they make, and all the touted bad feeling over pricing and slowness and failed patches, how about MS donate a tad of time to implementing some drivers for the "most penetration" devices lacking drivers ?Originally Posted by JohnnyMalaria

Are Microsoft execs trawling these forums nowadays ? :POriginally Posted by greymalkin

I imagine there is a whole load of stuff that gets quietly dropped into a Service Pack without disclosing it. It's a good opportunity to "fix it" without embarrassment or even liability.
-
I installed SP1 on my new laptop two days ago. I don't know what it fixed but at least nothing broke. When I get the time I'll install it on my desktop.
