When encoding an avi to DVD using the ffmpeg encoder, mpayer plays the avi file but Preview won't activate - mplayer appears then disappears without playing. Does this indicate a problem?

  2. Not necessarily. Check whether a file is created, if yes you may also open it in VLC to preview.

The file was created and ultimately, the DVD was created and burned successfully with excellent quality. Great encoder!

Nevertheless, the Preview was "disabled" during the entire encoding process. Also interestingly, when I played the file with VLC, it subsequently disabled the sound from my built-in speakers. A re-start didn't fix the problem until I realised that for some reason, VLC (I assume) had changed the speaker output to line out.
