Not necessarily. Check whether a file is created, if yes you may also open it in VLC to preview.

Nevertheless, the Preview was "disabled" during the entire encoding process. Also interestingly, when I played the file with VLC, it subsequently disabled the sound from my built-in speakers. A re-start didn't fix the problem until I realised that for some reason, VLC (I assume) had changed the speaker output to line out.
