Just wondering, why is it that it takes a lot longer to rip a single layer DVD+/-R disc than it does to rip single layer pressed media?

My only thought is that it may be because of the nature of burned media being less precise than pressed media, thus it would have to be read at a lower speed. The other possiblity that comes to mind is some type of firmware limitation.

BTW, I am using an JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD166 that came factory installed with my Dell Dimension 4600 in November of 2003. I am unsure of whether or not firmware updates are available (but I have looked). Ususally this drive rips at the following speeds:
    Single Layer DVD: ~5 minutes
    Dual layer DVD: ~15 minutes
    Single layer DVD+/-R: ~10 minutes

Any light that can be shed on this subject would be appreciated.

Why are you ripping it in the first place? If it's a DVDR then it's not copyprotected...so why not just copy it?

  3. I've got a Liteon 163, almost the same drive as yours. I get similar results to you, but it is more FW related than anything it seems. If I bitset my DVD+R discs to DVD-ROM, the drive will rip the disc much faster, thinking it's a pressed disc. That alone says it's FW related, although, by nature, burned discs tend to have higher read errors and lower reflectivity than pressed discs, which could cause slower rips in itself.

I'd suggest looking for a FW upgrade that speeds up your rip speeds, many exist for Liteon ROM drives.

I think that a lot of manufacturers purposely limit burnt media speeds for exactly that reason - they're expecting more errors and lower reflectivity.

The fact that the hardware can USUALLY read the disc anyway is immaterial.

  5. My plextor's rip speed islocked. I have to unlock it by holding down the eject button. Maybe yours is similar...

Step One: Read the guides to the left.

Step Two: You didn't read the guides, did you?

Step Three: Y'know, it's no use trying to help you if you refuse to read those guides.

Step Four: READ. THE. DAMN. GUIDES!

Step Five: English - DO YOU SPEAK IT?
