  1. Due to circumstances I recently upgraded to Nero 6 OEM and all was going well burning DVDs until I found that I could not burn XVCDs as they automatically get re-encoded to VCD standard.

Now I have gone back to 5.5 as it seemed to be better all round, although 6 was better with DVDs.

What do Nero users think though - is 6 worth staying with or is 5.5 better?

  2. For simply burning, 5.5 may well be a better choice than 6. But I've got 6.3, and as a whole when combined with Recode, Showtime, Nerovision Express, etc. the entire Suite of 6.xx is nice to have. For almost all my DVD Video burning I use DVD Decrypter, but I still usually use Nero 6 for DVD Data and CD burning, and it hasn't caused me any problems in that regard.

So I guess it depends whether or not you consider all of the great programs along with the burning program itself.

  3. For DVD it is TMPGEnc Plus and TMPGEnc DVD Author and then Nero to burn.

For VCDs and XVCDs it was TMPGEnc Plus and Nero 5.5. I will admit that I hadn't created an XVCD for a while (since moving up to 6), but did so yesteday - or rather I didn't as Nero 6 wouldn't allow it.

'Tis true though that the occasions where I make XVCDs are becomming rarer and rarer, so eventually 6 will take over.

While you're at it, why not use the best app for creating (X)VCD - VCDEasy? Your process would be the same as for DVD, but replacing TDA with VCDEasy.

  5. I did try one of the free versions a while ago but because (and I was very much inexperienced then) it couldn't see any of my disc drives I gave up.

Maybe I gave up too quickly. Maybe I will give it another look, thanks

This is because VCDEasy burning engine (known also as CDRDao) require ASPI layer to connect to drives. W2k and XP have no aspi. But VCDEasy 1.1.4 should recognise and use the aspi that come with nero.

You don't have to burn with VCDEasy - you can output to image file (cue/bin in VCDEasys case) that you then can write to CD-R/RW even with Nero.
