I copied a movie from DVD to my harddrive using TMPGEnc Author and it created a file with video: mpeg2 and audio: AC3.

I want to trim it, apply filters and so on so I opened it with VirtualDub-Mpeg2 1.5.10 (with the AC3 decoder (AC3ACM by fccHandler) installed). Done.

Now I want convert it to DivX.
I set the video compression to DivX 5.2.0 and the audio compression to Mp3. However when checking the completed file with GSpot it shows the audio as being PCM.

I have tried many settings and VD Mpeg2 only seems to be able to output audio PCM (full processing mode) or AC3 (direct stream copy).

Video and audio play back with no problems, but the file is too large without Mp3 compression on audio.

    Hello,

Use lamemp3 - install it into the virtualdub directory and you will have no problem using mp3.

Demux the .ac3 file. Convert to .wav using HeadAC3he, then convert that wav file to .mp3, with Audacity (or any encoder). Open the streams list in VDM:

Click ADD. Select your new MP3. Click on the MP3 track, then click MOVE UP. Click on any other tracks in the window, and click DISABLE. Click OK. Now encode to DIVX, or whatever. =)

Lame now appears under the audio compression options in VDM, but I still have the same problem as before. Only converts to PCM.

Can't I just "save .wav" straight from VDM then convert to MP3?

Open the streams list in VDM
Must be a little slow today as I can't seem to find where to do this.

    For a newb.

What is the reason that VirtualDub-Mpeg2 can not convert from AC3 to MP3?
MP3 is after all listed under the conversion options in the audio menu.
