DVD-R protected. Computer can't read

I receved two DVD-R (video) that my computer just can't read. I think it's some kind of protection becouse they works fine at my playstation (that I use as my DVD player). I want to extract the vídeos from this DVDs but if the computer can not read them... What can I do?

My recorder / DVD player is a Pioneer DVR-106D 1.05

what happens when you try to play it? can you rip it with dvd decrypter? what type of error message do you get?

It's impossible play it using the computer... It's impossible read the disk at the computer. It's readable just at the DVD player...

If crap media = "protection" ... maybe.

There is no protection. Something else is going on.
My guess is bad media. Could be the computer.

I don't think that is the case if it is readable at the DVD player. As I say, I have two discs with similar problem to be read by the computer. Each of them recorded by diferent people.
The first is an apple media 2X DVD-R (my computer try to read and nothing happens, when I click at DVD the computer says "Insert Disk")
The other is a Smac media 4X DVD-R

Both are -R. Could be you need a newer firmware, although with a 106D I wouldn't think so. It's definitely something up with your computer.

More than likely there is an error on the disk that your pc can see, but your standalone players can not.

I've experienced the same exact problem. A friend gave me a -R that he burned with a BenQ 1610. I can't remember what media it was, but I'm pretty sure it was cheap. Niether one of my PCs could access the disk. It would error out while trying to read it. The disk would play fine on both my stanalone DVD players. I blame a error recorded at the begining of the disk that the more sensetive DVD-Rom/Burner can see, but not a tipical standalone.

Gurm: I visit the Pionner web site, download the firmware update (was 1.05 and now is 1.08). No change. Continue not reading...

jtoolman2000: It's impossible read the disc. I open Windows Explorer and insert the disc at the drive. The icon of "reading CD/DVD" is showed together with the mouse icon. After, the computer says "Insert a disc at drive E" (is my translation because my windows is in portuguese...)

Read my post above. I'll bet that is what's happening with you.

There is no such thing as copy-protection on a burned disk, unless there are errors on it.

This gets down to the explanation that newbies don't understand about "raw" versus "cooked".

Your PC reads COMPLETELY differently than the DVD player. The DVD player has error correction in hardware, and reads at a single speed which is much slower than your DVD ROM.

Back in the time of CD's, people didn't understand why they ripped a CD and it sounded TERRIBLE. That's because Music CD's aren't formatted AT ALL, so the PC CD drive has to "guess" at where the data is. The CD player just starts playing at the beginning and reads to the end, with hardware error correction.

So what you're experiencing, most likely, is a small error on the disc in a vital part - the ID area or TOC. Your PC goes "can't read that crap", but the DVD player doesn't care and just jumps to Title 1.

i'm not sure of all of the ramifications.. but i'm surprised the big hollywood movie studio's dont take a cue from the music industry and intentionally put these errors on their discs to prevent them from being played on computers.

like those "CD's" that wouldnt play on computers, but would play on cd players. there were also some cd players it didnt work with, high-end systems & automobile cd players.

One of the frustrations with bad media is that seems to work on some players but not others. If other DVDs will play on your computer, it is very likely that your media is bad.

Guys, you are right. I test this two discs at other computer. The other computer read the disc but not play it. But is enough to copy them...
Pioneer stink?!
