Okay so I am new at this whole DVD converter thing and I need some help. I just bought a DVD recorder and burned a VHS tape onto a DVD. I then tried to play this same DVD on my computer and it will not let me. I can play it on a DVD player that is hooked up to my computer, but I would like to try to edit the DVD. How do I do this? All I see in the file is VIDEO_RM AND VIDEO_TS. Please help.

The VIDEO_TS file is the DVD. The other is something the recorder came up with.

Probably a lot of ways to edit it. I generally extract it to MPEG for editing. I use VOB2MPG most times to convert the DVD to one large MPEG. Then I can do what I want with it with most MPEG editors. Extraction will cause no quality loss.

After you have extracted it, maybe VideoReDo or MPG-VCR or similar for editing. Your choice there.

Then after editing, you need to author it again to DVD format and burn.

Try GUI for dvdauthor for freeware and ImgBurn to burn to DVD. Or use a commercial program for authoring.

Videoredo can open vobs directly from a dvd also. Or use Tmpgenc dvd author or ulead dvd moviefactor and use the add dvd video / import dvd function.

What are you using to play the VIDEO_TS folder back with on the PC? You will need a MPEG-2 codec installed for most players to work. Windows XP doesn't come with a MPEG-2 codec. You have to install one or use a program like PowerDVD that installs one.

VLC has it's own MPEG-2 codec, so it's a good test to see if a missing codec is the problem. It can play a VIDEO_TS folder or it can also play VOB files directly.

  7. Ok power DVD. I found that by copying to h/disk I could play ok.
Next is to decide on video editing software, I don`t mind paying so do you have any suggestions and have you heard of a piece of software called Super from www.erightsoft.
sorry more than 1 question but this site has stirred the juices so to speak

SUPER is just a video encoder/converter. I use it for odd format conversions. For better quality, I would use a different MPEG encoder, maybe HC or QuEnc, or one of the payware encoder programs.

Or try FAVC or ConvertXToDVD for easy conversions if you are converting videos off the net to DVD.

I already mentioned two lower end/cost MPEG editors, MPEG-VCR and VideoReDo. There are more listed in our 'Tools' sections, along with guides for most of them. MPEG Video Wizard is a little more advanced. It all depends what type of editing you want to do and how much you want to pay.

BTW, If you have more questions, it's better to start your own thread, to keep this thread to the original posters topic. 8)
