I've created a DVD of home-made movie, and the DVD is region 1 (according to disc information obtained by my DVD burning software). Will this disc be playable if I send it to friends in other countries in other regions (assuming their standard is also NTSC)? Of course, there is no encryption on my home-made disc.

  2. Why did you create it as region 1? Anyway -- the answer is it probably won't be playable on DVD players that only accept one region. Of course, region-free players are much more popular outside the USA/Canada...

I did not specify to make the disc any region. I used BenQ 1610 recorder & Ulead VS 8 to create and burn the disc. Afterwards, I used RecordNow to find out disc info, which indicated that the disc is region 1.

Back when I first installed the burner, I did have to set the region specifically prior to functioning, I chose region 1 (region 0 was not an option). It said that the region could be changed (on the BenQ recorder) up to 5 times only. I think that's why all disc burned by the recording has resulting region 1 setting.

That was for what region you are in for what region disc's you can play, does not affect the region code that the disc is burned with.

Check it with DvdInfo , as i doubt it truely is just region 1, and let us know what that reports it as.

You can also check the DVD with DVD Decrypter. Most home authoring programs make region 0 DVDs, so you shouldn't have any region problems by sending it to friends. Also, it has been estimated that up to 95% of the world's DVD players can correctly play a NTSC DVD, whether their TV system is PAL or NTSC. In fact, Hong Kong and Brazil, which use PAL, actually make NTSC DVDs just so they can easily be played around the world. The odds are that your friends DVD players can convert your NTSC DVD to PAL output for display if necessary, so don't worry about it.

You guys are absolutely correct! According to DVDInfo & DVD Decryptor, my disc is region 1~8. And thanks for the tip on NTSC, jman98. I can share my movie with family members around the world worry-free about its readability.

  8. Here's some BenQ RPCI firmware you can have fun with because DVD regions shouldn't exist :
