DVD Player - plays VCD not CD-R/RW

Greetings,

I was looking at a DVD player to purchase. The Sony DVP-S360 DVD Player says it plays VCD discs but not CD-R ones. I thought all VCD discs were CD-R's... ?

Can you guys recommend a good player to play VCD discs... something cheap...

You are getting your terms confused..

VCD is a video format, no matter what type of media it is on..it is still a video format..as a format, VCD can be placed on CDRs or CDRWs..Sony DVD players are notorious for not liking CRs but taking CDRWs just fine.

VCDs come on "commercial" discs as well. The Sony will likely play commercial VCDs, but not CD-R VCDs (or anything that's on CD-R.)

All of the following are CD-R and CD-RW compatible:

The Mintek DVD-2580, which is $79.99 at Best Buy, plays VCD but not SVCD. You may also be available to find the Shinsonic DVD-100 and/or DVD-100A at Best Buy for the same price; like the Mintek, they have VCD but not SVCD support.

The Apex AD-1500, which is $79.99 at Circuit City, plays VCD and SVCD.

The Apex AD-500W, which is about $89 at Walmart, plays VCD and SVCD. There is also a 500WM available for the same price; it should also be fully compatible with VCD and SVCD.

You might still be able to find the Apex AD-1000 at Walmart for about $75. It is essentially the same as the AD-1500, except that it lacks a front panel display.
