  1. Is there a way to convert an ASX file into a physical file such as WMV, MPEG2, MPEG1, or AVI? Are there any free ware tools out there that can do this?

That's like trying to convert an M3U (mp3 playlist), or an alias/shortcut.

It's just a Metafile (pointer to, description of File).

If you want to convert, open the file up in a text editor, read where it points to, get the real file and convert that.

  3. Cornucopia,

how do you get the 'real' file once you know where it points to? When I put the 'url' in the address bar it just pops up the video but doesn't let me download it. also the url doesn't start with http it starts with mms.

  4. Get Net Transport (a free download manager).
Click Job, New Download, and paste in the url that begins with mms.
It will save the video to your hard drive.
