I have many movies in avi (divx) format. Most of them have mpeg audio. As mpeg is valid audio format for DVD, there is no reason to repack 'em, if it can be demuxed from avi.

Question is, is there any tool for Mac (OSX), that can extract it in MPEG format? Many tools can convert it to AIFF or something else, but at least theoretically it decreases quality, since it has to be repacked (don't want to do PCM). Even Windoze app would do, I have old PII as gateway and running sometimes required win apps.

    You could try this app,
    but it's getting poor ratings
    on VT:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14663

Most tools AFAIK must first be able to
import/open the .avi file to be able to
even SEE the audio stream ( detect).
Since .AVI is NOT a QT compatible
standard file, but rather a wrapper
containing an infinite number of file
types audio and video, unless the app
can post process/extract the mpeg audio via QT,
    the point is moot.

Since in all apps but ffmpegx Q.R.E.A.M.
rules apply, your only options when it comes to
getting this audio out in QT based apps will be:

    1. Open the file /Import the file (.avi)
    2. Decode to either a passthrough format
( even still, some minor encoding will happen)
    or
    3. Export (save as) to AIFF, MP3 or WAV format.

that said, Amadeus II or QT Pro could import/extract
the audio and save/export back to the above mentioned
    file types.

Also, hijacking and re-recording to a new audio stream
using Wiretap or Audio Hijack Pro would suffciently
get around any loss in encoding, because you would be
creating a NEW file, rather than re-packing the old one.
