Hi there,
OK, maybe some questions will seem stupid, but I believe home DVD recording is not a stable technology yet. But, my fathers keeps saying that he wants a way to transfer all home videos to DVD... And when I say all, I mean 100's of hours...
Well, I made a little search today, and came across home DVD recorders, so I have a few questions :
1. Which one, on your opinion, is the best choice? (from my quick research I'd say Panasonic DMR-E85HS ???)
2. Is there a zone compatibility issue? I mean, when I burn DVD's, is it gonna be a zone 1 DVD or a DVD that can play anywhere?
3. Does real time recording really work well, or is passing through the HD a better idea?
4. Are there encoding problems like most conversion (sound sync, frame loss, quality loss... )
Thanks for your help,
Simo

- I have a dream: 1,000,000,000,000 bytes free.
- The box said: 'install on Windows XP, 2003 or better'. So I installed it on Linux.
- Windows is NOT a virus. Viruses DO something -
Hi Simo - you will get a lot of different answers on which one is best, but my belief is that for a basic transfer of (home) video to DVD, the DVD recorders work very well. There are many panasonic fans here and I happen to like the sony products.
If you stick to the 2 hour modes or less per 4.7GB DVD, I think many of the recorders will give excellent results - the features vary, but overall, I think you will do well this way. And, for hundreds of hours of video, it's the easiest way to transfer.
That said, there is more you can do on a computer than you can w/ the recorders. For example, the recorders typically don't make nice menus w/ thumbnails for chapters on the disk (although govideo has a new one that does, but it got terrible reviews). Many people transfer video to DVD on a re-writable on the dvd recorder for ease and speeed of encoding, and then rip that to the PC to make the finished proudct (which is what I typically do). This seems to occur more and more frequently for home video transfers. High quality encoding and noise reduction, etc. and you can still create your menus, etc.
Also, one tip - make sure you have a good VCR .. many people like the JVC VCR's b/c of their ability to get a nice picture off the tape ... check the posts here for more info.
Good luck to you!"As you ramble on through life, brother, whatever be your goal - keep your eye upon the doughnut and not upon the hole." -

3) 6 of one...half dozen of the other. My DVD Recorder has no hard drive and have no desire or longing for one.
4) Not unless you start mucking with the finished DVD in your computer DVD Burner...and that is only a maybe. Putting 1 or 2 hours of home movies to a DVD....very good quality. Try to cram 6 hours to a DVD...you get less quality...MUCH less @6 hours. 6 Hours on a VHS tape looks crappier than a VHS tape recorded in 2 hour mode...same with a DVD recorder.
The key thing to look for in a DVD Recorder nowadays is reliability first....most of them will create a DVD that will play in "something". There are no guarantees the DVD created by whatever machine you choose to buy will play in every DVD player....remember that and you won't be disappointed.

I'll add to the answer about having one with a hard drive. There are two reasons the hard drive is nice to have if you're willing to spend the additional money. One is that it works similarly to a PVR for recording programs off of TV for time-shift viewing (you can even start watching a program while it is recording). You can do this with a DVD but the hard drive holds, say, 80 GB of content while the DVD holds just 4 GB. The other benefit is when you want to do trimming of content or re-arrange the order of the titles before burning to DVD.
