  1. Well, I left this sit at the store for 3 weeks and I couldn't leave it there any longer. I passed on this same model months ago here. I basically sacrificed my new CPU for this. I believe this is a Japanese version (I'm in Japan) of the JVC HR-S9XXX series. It doesn't look like 9911 but it bears a striking resemblance to the 9800. What I need is help identifying it (not that important though, I already know it is a high end JVC with 4MB TBC & Digital wide TBC). What I really need help with is the menus. If someone could post the menu structure of one of thses VCRs I'd really appreciate it. I've noticed the Japanese versions of stuff usually has the same menu setting except for the BS set up here. Here are some pictures:

Aw crap. I just noticed we changed the max file size to 150kb. Damn... It's rather heavy as well.

  2. Actually, it looks more like a 9600 to me...

Here is the 9600 manual link (.pdf)

It can only be the 9500 or 9600.
The 9600 will have all the menus shown here:
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/vcrtbcsuggestions.htm
    (see bottom of page)

The 9500 will be missing some of those filters.

Then again, if it's all Japanese .... maybe you can't read that either.

  4. Yeah, I may need to have it translated. My menus don't exactly line up with the 9600 manual. I forgot about the manual. It's a little beat up but it was in the bag...

*edit* Yeah, I think this is a 9600. I can tell that what I am messing with is the video calibration. I think I have another option (other than on/off) under my Digital R3 menu though. Does the 9600 have a third option there?

  5. I know it's lame to reply to my own post but I am pretty impressed with the picture quality from this VCR. Perhaps more impressive is my Toshiba SVHS VCR. It's picture is right up on par, a little brighter though.

You know, I've been reading around the ol' "videohelp" forums HEAPS, and here in Australia I can either buy a S-VHS JVC "PAL-only" VCR, or a multisystem VHS Panasonic or Sony... which is $300-$400 cheaper... And this "S-video" shit seems like a few extra hundred dollars for a millimetre improvement in quality, y'know?

I honestly think I'm going with the multisystem Sony or Panasonic. JVC is for me overkill.

A 6-head hi-fi brand-name VCR with external TBC (CTB-1000) seems the way to go, for me.
