After I tried to d/l all the free software that the newbie section said to d/l, it was all jacked up! I posted way late last night, and that post has disappeared from the forum. Today, I even emailed Sefy for help. I would like to get some answers before I completely freak out. So, here is an excerpt of what help I needed:
"First of all, you say "Unzip the tools you are going to be working with into the SAME folder". What exactly do you mean by that?
I spent quite awhile downloading all the software, but if I click on the desktop icon, it goes to the file and folder tasks with all the separate parts of that particular software! This doesn't seem right to me at all. If I could just get your help on this part of it, I should be able to follow your directions to rip DVD's. This is a new computer and works alot differently then our old laptop did. I am feeling like a big idiot. Could you help me out here?"
I have Windows XP, too. I noticed another person had a problem and someone recommened her to d/l another software she needed because of XP. The newbie software suggested just Smart Ripper, DVD2..., and TMPEG w/ VFAPI somethin' rather. Is that all I need? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

all you need is SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, and TMPGEnc w/ vfapi plugin you must unzip the progrmas on ther own folder except for the plugin put that with TMPGRnc and click on insatll.bat to register it
-
and make sure you have a working ASPI layer because Xp doesnt have a ASpi layer if you need it just private message me and ill tell you where to get it okay

I still don't get why when I click on the desktop icon, why does it NOT OPEN directly to the Smart Ripper, etc..Obviously, I am not unzipping them correctly? Or is the icon suppose to look like a file folder and open to the files and folders task with all the other readme crap I could care less about?
And, when you say to have the TMPG w/plugin folder together, do I do this manually, or does it put them together after I run the install.bat?? Because if I am required to know enough about computers to know how to put them together, I am screwed. I can follow directions to the T, but the way I understand it, I have to have all the programs in the "SAME folder" to do it. I looked in Control Panel in the programs, and do not see it in there. Is it there or not? Again, what does it mean to have all these programs in the SAME folder? Because, they are clearly not in the same folder at all. This is driving me bonkers! Please explain to me what the hell I am doing wrong and how to do it. I would be so grateful. And when I learn how to do all this stuff, I will gladly help the others that come on in the future with the same "duh!" questions with patience and understanding.

Pinoy,
While looking thru my computer, I remember seeing something like ASPI in here somewhere. How would I check to see if I do have it already, or is it a no brainer that I don't have it already and need it. If the answer is "yes, you need it for sure!" then I would gladly welcome you to help me get it! All the help I can get, Tracey -
thump01, i'm currently at work, your email must have arrived when I slept, i'll only be able to look at it in about 8 hours from now, but let me explain myself, although I thought I was pretty clear in the guide:
Pretend you just downloaded all the required programs, unzipping them to the same folder would be, creating a folder in your C:\Program Files
in this tiny example, create a TMPGEnc folder like so:
C:\Program FIles\TMPGEnc
Now, unzip all the files you downloaded INTO that folder!
Email me for faster replies!

thump01 here download ASPI check to see if you have a working ASPI layer:
ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe
heres wat you do if you start the program you would ehtier see a red or green background on the Adaptec log...if you get a red background private message me and tell you where you can get the ASPI drivers ,but if the background is green your all set it might look like this:
