  1. for some reason my dvd rom drive does not recognize any media i put into it...cd/dvds that i have burned...purchased cd/dvds

windows xp recognizes it as a drive that is working properly but i have no idea what is wrong with it...perhaps it's dead?

i tried checking all cables to see if it's plugged in properly but no dice

any ideas on what's going on or what i can do before i decide to trash this drive?

    thanks for any help

  2. Is it possible to try out the drive on a friend's computer?

    Perhaps it is dead...

Even though XP recognizes it as a valid drive there could still be some internal failure that is causing your problem (IE: Dirty laser... whatever). Your best bet is to swap it into another computer and see if you get the same results.
