  1. using this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?link=699 what do i need to do so that when complete i have .mp3 audio with front left, center, right, and subwoofer channels?

i am not interested in 5.1, only front right, center, left, and sub... currently i am doing this in DVD2AVI under Audio: check Track 1 (i decode the AC3 6 channel stream in DVD Decrypter), check Decode under Dolby Digital, check Dolby Surround Downmix, and UltraHigh under 48h -> 44. i then save the project and i am left with a .wav file around 1Gb in size that i then encode to a .mp3 track @ 192kbps, stereo, high-quality for use in my final file.

i have no way to *test* the audio by listening as i am out of the States and won't be home for months. i only have headphones, but i want to be sure that once home i will be able to have the preferred audio described above.

    TIA!

I think mp3 is stereo (2 channel) only. Keep the AC3 (just rip it as is, use as audio track in AVI) track if you want more.

  3. Thats correct. MP3 is only stereo. MP3 surround offers multi channel 5.1 audio and is backward compatible to MP3 streo. But I am not sure the tools you are using can REALLY encode to MP3 surround !

Just use the original AC3 audio track.

  5. thanks for the replies!
    to continue the discussion:

yes, .mp3 is 2-channel (stereo), but what i am driving at is this: by selecting the settings that i do in DVD2AVI for the audio, will the resulting .wav file be stereo and Dolby Surround compatible? if so, will re-encoding as an .mp3 file retain this information, thus enabling me to have a Dolby Surround (NOT 5.1; just the front left, center, front right, and sub channel... I.E. Dolby Pro Logic) audio track?

also, regarding the MP3 Surround encoder... if the above is correct, then what settings would i need to change so that the resulting .wav is a 6-channel uncompressed file suitable for MP3 Surround encoding?

Ah - My guide! I'm flattered. No, AFAIK, DVD2AVI downmixes to stereo wav. I think there's some way to decode 5.1 AC3 to 6 wavs, but not using any of the tools in this guide. Might be besweet - it has many tricks up its sleave. So, my suggestion is to just demux the AC3 as is, then find guides for 5.1 AC3 to wav - it's a topic of its own!
