    Hello,

There's an ad for the Presidents Day sale at COMPUSA for a Western Digital 80 gb harddrive for $25 after rebates. It is a 7200 rpm drive. I already have a preinstalled 80 gb harddrive that is my only harddrive on my emachine. I don't know what speed it is. However this is what I would use for video processing and ripping + etc.... My main reason for bumping my storage to 160gb total would be to transfer my video_ts folders after ripping or authoring (from my capture card) so I can leave room on my main drive.

So is 7200 rpm acceptable for storage only???? What's the max these days????

    Thanks.

    Kevin

  2. It's fine. The max on an IDE drive is 10,000rpm, and there's only one maker - Western Digital. But it's limited to 72GB and expensive for the size. I'd get the 7200 drive. But you MAY want to swap the drives if you look up your other drive and find out it's 5400. That'll give a slight boost to your overall system speed.

The Western Digital (10,000rpm) is 74GB and is not IDE, but SATA. Its named WD Raptor and theres also a 36GB version, also SATA. I not aware of any IDE drives above 7200rpm.

Right you are. Oops. A pal has this and I thought his mobo was too old for SATA. Maybe he added a card or I'm mistaken on the vintage. But anyway, good catch.

    Yoda,

I'd think twice about buying this drive.

80 gig is damn near a commodity, meaning they are getting ready to quit making them.

I saw a 160 at Office Depot this past week at 69.95, after rebate, admittedly more than twice as much, in the end per Gig, but, just what in the hell are you gonna do with such a "small" drive in future. Same at Sam's, but no rebate, at 80 bucks.

They just take up too much room in the case, anymore.

250 WD, if you can swing 130 bucks at Sam's Club, if you are a member. Went there to see if the price had dropped after seeing the 160 for less than their 80 bucks price. Not yet

Getting pissed with the "rebate" gig. Saw one item that was 5 bucks after 65 bucks "rebate". Well, **** 'em.

    Cheers,

    George

If bucks are really tight, ignore the above.

    Hello,

Thanks for all the advice guys. Yeah I know they go way higher than 80gb these days but the price looked good.

In fact it was too good....

You had to buy a new laptop or desktop to get the deal!

Well it was my fault since I didn't look closer.......

BUT it wasn't a wasted trip this morning. I did get the advertised RADEON 9250 PCI card for $30 after rebates. Since my emachine doesn't have agp slots this is about as good as I can do.....

Thanks for all the help again.

    Hello,

No it was right on the front page but the way they had the ad split up it wasn't right next to the computer - again I didn't look close enough....

But I'm not THAT in need of more harddrive space. In fact this little dvd backup surge I'm in currently got me to free up some space and I'm looking at 30gb free at the moment

    Yoda,

200 gig Maxtor, 60 bucks after 30 buck rebate, this week at Staples, 89.94 straight up + tax.

    How can you beat that?

5 times the space for less than 3 times the money. 7200, 8 meg cache, though that means nothing.

Was that the Sunday the Feb. 20 flyer? 6 hour sale? Friend called to ask if I bought the LiteOn 5005 at 99 bucks after rebate. Didn't go till after 3. Sale was over. Would have, had I known of it.

    Cheers,

    George

Also, 512 MB Sandisk Micro USB Thumb Drive for 40 less 10 rebate, 30 bucks final. You can buy an adapter for it to use as an MP3 player, additional 60 bucks regular, will wait till they go on sale.
