  1. Hi

I have an avi file that was ok but went wrong after moving from one hard drive to another. Apparently it lost itīs index block and now I canīt even browse the folder itīs in because it will max out the explorer resources forcing me to terminate the process.

GSpot tells me that I have the apropriate codecs (mp42 and mp3) but when I load it to VDub 1.5 and it starts "Reconstructing missing index block(agressive mode)" when it finishes I get this error message:

    Whatīs wrong with this?

PS - sorry for the lamest cropping ever

  2. You need this codec:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DivX_3.11

There is a registry tweek which will fix the Explorer problem. It crops up here all the time so you'll find it if you search a little.

I had saved a copy of the fix locally:

    1. Open up regedit.exe.

    2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler

    3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

Or you can rename PropertyHandler to something else like xPropertyHandler.

  3. It didnīt solve it.

Besides GSpot reports that I have apropriate codecs but it canīt render...

    Anymore ideas?

GSpot is telling you you have a DirectShow codec installed for MP42, not the VFW codec that VirtualDub requires.

Did you install the Divx3.11alpha codec properly? First extract all the files to a suitable location, then run the Register_Divx.exe program. Always works for me.

  5. Definetely doesnīt work....

I installed the way you said but still nothing - previously I just right-clicked the inf file and selected install, which I think is the same thing.

Although something weird happens... After installing the 3.11alpha codec when I start VDub I get a message saying that this is a hacked codec and may not work properly.

Is it supposed to say that? īcause the codecs were downloaded from divx-digest...

    More ideas, please

I'm not sure but that may not install the codec the same was as running the exe file. I just installed the codec (after uninstalling it) using the INF file and VirtualDubMod was able to open an MP43 file that I have sitting around. But I had previously installed with the EXE file so something may have been left over from that previous install. You might try running the EXE to be sure.

I believe Microsoft originally released the source code to their MPEG4 codec as a technology demonstration -- back before they decided to go proprietary with Windows Media codecs. Divx was originally based on this source. The 3.11 alpha versions are later modifications of the withdrawn and discontinued Microsoft source. It doesn't surprise me that there are bugs in the codec -- it was never a real product, and, well, it is from Microsoft!

    Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

  7. One other thing you can try is to use a fourcc changer to change the fourcc code to DIV3 or something else.

  8. Sorry, I have no idea of what youīre talking about.

    Please explain.

ok. Seems like you have lots of trouble going on there.

    Suggestion #1 ...

Let it go through the process, but just before it crashes (or doesn't finish)
stop it. you might have to do this onece more, to note where it crashes
    in the progress bar

Then, see if you can work with whatever got re-index

Re-save that portation to an new AVI file.

    Suggestion #2 ...

Open the AVI source inside TMPG. And, inside the [x] Source Range
under Advance TAB, select the range before the video, either turns black
or bombs out. If it crashes, see if you can note the last frame number, and
    record that.
    .
When you re-open it again inside TMPG, go back to [x] Source Range, and
and just type in the frame start and end numbers ie, [0 ] and [10000 ] and
just press the [OK] button. Don't touch or click any other button but the
    [OK] one.

If you don't want to take any chances, and everything went ok with the
above steps, (for TMPG) then do yourself a favor, and press Ctrl+S to save
it as a Project file (*.tpr) and should it crash un expectely, you can just load
in the *.tpr file, and try again, but with less steps

    And go from there.

    Good luck,

  12. thanks for the replies, everybody

ok, iīve tried everything that has been sugested and the best thing Iīve got so far is about a 1 second of playable video.

    smr patch

installed it - didnīt make any difference

    fourcc changer

tried it but both boxes show "mp42" so I guess thereīs no problem there, but i tried changing the lower pulldown (used codec) to DIV3 but nothing.

then I tried all VDubīs and the only one that could do anything was VdubMod - gave me about one second of video.

But still they all say Iīm lacking apropriate decompressor.

AviCodec reports that the video codec MS MPEG4 V2 is not supported although GSpot says Iīve got 2 codecs installed...

This file was playable it got bad moving from internal hard drive to external drive. I really want to keep this file and Iīm willing lose some time trying to solve this.

But I canīt do it without help beacause I have no idea of whatīs going on...

  13. If you can play a little bit of the file the problem can't be a missing codec. It's probably a corrupt file. You might try using DivFix

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DivFix

to rebuild the keyframe index. But since VirtualDub/MPEG/Mod can't fix it I doubt DivFix will either.

I think I gave you a good idea with the TMPG route. But, I guess it takes an
advanced user to figure it out (what I was on about) in my steps.

    But, in short ...

If you open TMPG first, but without opening any video source files..
If you first setup the [x] Source Range with dummy values of say, on
frame 100 to 1500 (this is just theory here) and setup the two params..

    STEP 1
    Start: [100 ] and End: [1500]

    Then close TMPG down.

Then start TMPG again, and this time, open the divX file, do a Save As
to another AVI file. All a long, note when (or if) the AVI bombs out, that
your remember the frame number.., so that you can jump over this step 1
and repeat with different values for your [x] Source range until you get
everything. You could get it all in one pass, or in several. It just depends
how bad your AVI file is.

The again, the above is a very good technique. i know, because I've used it
many times. It's an advance guru secret/tip, and i'm sharing it with you
    here (for nothing) I suppose.
