Is it possible to convert music from cassette tape to CD? If so, How do I go about doing this? What kind of hardware do I need? As you can see, I know nothing about this so explaining with a decent amount of detail would really help. I appreciate any suggestions I can get. Thanks.

Line out on your tape deck to line in on your sound card. Record using an audio program like Soundforge, Goldwave or Cool Edit, either one track at a time or split the tracks with the audio program. Save as a wave file or MP3 and use a CD burning program to burn the file to an audio format CD.

Is there a freeware that will do this? I would like to try it before I buy any software.
Also, I believe my sound card is built into my mother board so I do not have any external connections. What do I do about this? -
even with your sound card built into your motherboard. you should still have a LINE IN jack. or a MICROPHONE jack. check Downloads.com for maybe some freeware or shareware. i think they have some stuff. i got one program that i used for the trial period and havn't used it since but it worked perfect for what i needed.....

Thanks for the fast replies.
Another question - what kind of cable does this require? I have a microphone jack on my computer and a mini stereo system, but do not know how to connect them. -
if you have OUT jacks on your ministereo then use those. if not then use your speakers out and plug them into your mic jack. if your not sure of what cables to get, then go to your local Radio Shack, tell them what your trying to do and they should point you in the right direction. if your getting into different cables and splicing and crossing, it gets hard to explain but what you want to do can be done........

Thanks for all your help. I will definitely visit Radio Shack and get what I need. I also just found a web site that may help me further:

(In case any one else would like to know who doesn't already)
I am thankful that it does not sound like a very hard task to accomplish - I guess I will find out...
Thanks again. -
Hi I've done this many times before, I find it best using
Media jukebox by j.river version 7.2.22. Shareware with full fuctionality very easy to use. Get a walkman and a 6ft cable both ends must have a jack plug on them, both ends the same 3.5cm/1/8" plug. the same as the plug on your head phones. plug one end into walkman and the other end into the back of your pc into line in there should be 3 sockets mic speakers and line in all same size.
Download at http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/download.html
Start software goto
1 tools
2 record sound
3 options
4 select line in
5.select uncompressed .wav
6 choose directory to save file
7 ok
8 click start
9 press play on walkman
10 wait
11 can burn resulting wav files direct with nero or what ever burn software you have.
