Hi guys. I need some help is you can please.
First of all I know nothing about subtitles. The only thing I know is to translate them in my native language which is Greek.
I have my fav tv show in DivX video and I want to add to this video the subtitles for each episode.
So far I have some subtitles in srt and sub format....but I do not know what to do with them.
First I need to know which program(s) should I use
What I want to do is this:
I want to learn how to add these subtitles in the video so that it can play like any usual video with subtitles.
After I learn how to do that, I can learn how to make my own subtitles, translate them and add them to these video files.
I hope Ive made everything clear because Ive searched all over and I have found so many different programs and I dont know what to do

Thanks in advance guys for any answers

Yes, what's your end product? A DVD or SVCD or VCD or keep it as AVI?

  5. Put them both into the same folder and rename the Sub with the same name as the movie, and when you play the movie the Sub's should play just fine.

    Tried it, aint working

Regarding the Subtitle Workshop I already have and FINALLY I figured out how to translate the English to Greek subtitles. The point is...what do I do from now on in order to add those Greek subs to the avi file I want?
    Should I download another program?

Take a look at Baldricks link - That's the way to do it. Many AVI players (like MPC) have their own subtitle renderer too.

YieeHaaa! I thought you'd have a hard time getting the Greek characters to display correctly, but then thought: Let's take that when we get there... Glad you succeded.

I just wanted to ask a small question.
To make my own subtitles I will used Subtitle Workshop right?
What do I have to do to write my own subtitles?
I mean what about time, synchronisation (sp?)
I hope I make some sense

Best bet is to find subs in some other language, to use as a "template" for timing. Else, a stop watch might come in handy (or a video player with frame/time counter).

If you use ffdshow for decoding or even raw then you can use the OSD for frame and time counts.

    Thanks guys.
    I have one final question.
After adding the subtitles and translating them to Greek, I played the video and it was perfect.
Then I took the avi file out of the folder (which contained the srt file) and the subtitles were gone. How do I save them so I can view the avi file WITH the subtitles I made in another pc? Do I have to install the same subtitle programs in every other pc I use?

Yes, the AVI and srt have to remain in the same directory/folder. And the computer playing it has to have DirectVobSub or a subtitle aware player to display them.

I found something as I was fiddling with SubtitleWorkshop.
I went to Movie. Save Media Startup File and chose asx

Then I played the asx file (which was out of the folder) and it had Greek subs! I did it?

Nah, when I erased the initial avi file the asx file could not play
So I have to keep them in files now I suppose otherwise the subs wont be permanent

Never used asx, but I think it's just like a shortcut to your AVI (and possibly .srt) so I still think both have to be present...

You can mux the srt into the avi with AVIMuxGUI, however you will still need directvobsub or similar for playback.
