  1. I've recently tried winavi and found it to be incredibly fast...that is, until it locks up, which it does no matter what kind of avi file I try to convert and no matter what I try to convert it to. So my question is, what does everyone who converts AVI to DVD or AVI to SVCD use for speed, quality and any other miscellaneous features you like. Please exclude Tmpg, I think most of us are familiar with that. I'm talking about maybe a few lesser known programs. I'd like to get as many of your opinions as I can.

    Thank you

Try CCE Basic edition. Only $50 or so.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. CCE for speed, with avisynth for quality.
Canopus Procoder for speed and quality.
    Mainconcept mpeg encoder.
    All in one stuff:
    VSO divx to dvd.
    Intervideo DVD Creator 2.
    Cucusoft.
    Cyberlink.
    QuEnc (with a gui).
    LSX Mpeg encoder.
    Boilsoft.
    Honestech.
    etc.
(these next 3 all use an external encoder, but are free).
    DIKO.
    DVD2SVCD.
    TheFilmMachine.

  5. Hey Blazey, thanks for pointing me towards the tools section of this site but I knew it was there. I was interested in getting the individual user's opinion, because everyone's tastes are different. Maybe you had a hard time understanding me or else just don't have an opinion of your own. As for the rest who had actual opinions, thanks. Hope to hear from more of you.

I did just a few conversions of AVI to DVD and the tool that was most reliable, very fast and dependable would be NeroVision Express - export video option. Most robust video scan for errors (important) when loading, v. good output (at least for AVI) and option to have audio encoded to DD2.0 (good to have). DVDSanta error scan is lousy and you may end up with a corrupted MPEG (though encoding is good). Overall NVExpress is really good and output was always 100%. My pick.

VSO DivxtoDVD for one-click action. Still early days, so it will keep getting better. Grab it while it's still free.

I use virtualdub > CCE instead of Avisynth. Personal preference and suits my current workflow better. The main advantage this has is control. None of the one-click-wonders gives you any real control over the finished product. That's OK if you just want to rip one off quickly, not so good if this is something you want add a little polish to.

  10. If you want brainless, get VSO.
If you want quality, get a separate editor, encoder, and authoring app. Then learn how to use them properly.
