    Any more info?
How old is the drive - did it burn DVDs well before?
It uses differnet lasers (I think) to burn CD and DVD so if the DVD part is u/s the CD part should still work.
Have you recently installed any other burning software or say something like AnyDVD or upgraded to XP SP2 (fill in your profile it helps)
Have you totally wiped NERO from your system before upgrading to latest version. If not download remover tool from ahead to remove it completely from registry then install new version.

  3. Hi,

The drive is about a year old and worked well before XP crashed and I had to re-install windows.

I installed Roxio Easy Cd/DVD creater after nero wouldn't work. Roxio burned a dvd but it wouldn't work in my player. I'm not that familiar with Roxio yet so don't know if I did it correctly. Nero is a much better burning program & DVD shrink doesn't burn without it so wanted to get it working.

I updated nero versions from 6 to 6.6.0.6 so didn't completely remove nero v 6 first cos I thought the update wouldn't work then.

I have got XP SP2 but had it before when it worked.

    cheers

    Interesting.....
From what I can gather you had a stable pc before running XP SP2 and NERO together, but since you reloaded windows you have had problems.
Was this a complete format and then install XP? is your version of XP with SP2 or did you load SP2 as an upgrade once Xp installed? It sounds like a NERO installation problem (however your burner could still have issues but not if it burned a DVD with Roxio (was this DVD unreadable in your pc as well as your standalone)
Try removing NERO completely from your system - take off ROXIO as well cos it does conflict with NERO - well it certainly used to (VXD file problems). You need to get the remover tool from ahead or you can go through the registry and remove it bit by bit (it's easier using the tool).
Reinstall NERO version 6 -you said you didn't have problems before so it should work with SP2 (I think there were issues with SP2 though).
You can also try re-installing ASPI layer - I know XP doesn't need ASPI layer to burn but I think NERO likes it. I installed version 4.6, but I think there is newer version now, do a google search for FORCEASPI program which also comes with a check prog to show what layer you have installed and whether the ASPI layer has installed properly.
You can also try and switch off XP burning - I haven't had to do this but I
remember a post about it not too long ago.
    Hope this helps
    Regards
    Ken

    EDIT
Here is link for ASPI layer stuff including instructions for installing

Also note you can burn DVDs using DVDDecrypter and Shrink, just uncheck use NERO to burn option. I think you have to burn it as an ISO though.

Nero uses it's own ASPI, you don't need to install the Adaptec one.

If that's true how come it doesn't show up when you do an ASPI check?

    Would I lie to you?

Perhaps it doesn't show up with ASPICHK because it isn't in the System directory, it's installed under C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero (amongst other Nero subdirectories.)

Use Nero Infotool for proof (see screenshot below)
