  1. I did a quick search and didn't find anything that was useful, so I'm posting a new message. I tried converting an XVid to DVD using DJRumpy's guide.

I did not extract the audio, because the audio is MP3 and I had no errors when I opened it with VirtualDubMod.

I encoded it with CCE, following all of the settings in DJRumpy's guide.

Authored with DVDAuthorGUI and burned with Nero.

When I played it back on my computer's DVD Rom with CyberLink Power DVD software, no problems. When I tried playing it back on a Mintek DVD-2110 and Pioneer DV-343, video seemed ok, but audio was skipping horribly.

I was thinking about extracting the audio, but I'm not sure if that would accout for why there's no playback problems with my PC, but there are playback problems with the DVD players. So, before I waste my time enconding again, I was hoping that someone knew what was going on.

    Thanks

    Hi fwtong,
if I understand it right, you are keeping your audio as MP3, but MP3 is not DVD standard, may be you should convert your audio to MP2 ?

I don't think DVDAuthorGUI would let you leave audio as MP3 on DVD - not if it's a decent package, anyway

AFAIK Virtualdubmod does not have issues with VBR MP3 audio (the mod flavour has quite a few of the good bits of all the other flavours), so you cannot simply rely on the presence of the warning, whereas the standard flavour gives the "virtualdub has detected MP3 audio, this will create skew of ... you should extract to WAV and re-encode..." message.

The reality of the situation also is that your PC will play almost anything - they are much more forgiving that settop DVD players regarding adherence to standards, too high/low bitrates, etc etc. Short of the media and your players causing the issue, I think it might be worth your while trying to extract the audio, then re-encode it with ffmpeggui or your encoder of choice. At the very worst you'll be able to rule out the audio once and for all if this method exhibits the same behaviour.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. Actually, virtualdubmod wasn't what I used for encoding. I used CCE to do the encoding and it generated a mpa file for audio from the mp3 audio stream in the avi.

Anyways, I tried extracting the audio and encoding it to AC3. I think that solved that problem so far. Although, I do have another problem, and if persists, I'll start a new topic with the appropriate subject, if I can't find any prior posts with the same issue.

  5. I'm using the same method as you, the only difference is that I'm converting the MP3 audio to WAV first before encoding with CCE to an MPA file. It seems to work great.

I haven't tried AC3 yet, which encoder are you using? I've heard that there are some issues with AC3 on Pioneer players, so I've stayed away from that for the time being.

Maybe you could try VSO DivXtoDVD.
I use it and I'm very pleased with results.
If you wish to reauthor, then just demux with Vobedit, and use your favorite DVD authoring software.
Very simple and fast procedure using freeware programs.
