Can you setup SVCD menus like DVD menus where you can highlight something and select/play it?
Or is the only option for (X)(S)VCD to press the corresponding number of the button directly on your remote?

Not like on a DVD (i.e., using overlay graphics).
You could create a dummy "highlighting" menu system by using multiple still screens each with an option "highlighted". Navigation between screens must use the following options: prev, next, default, return, numbers (1-99). That is, S/VCDs cannot use the cursor arrows as on a DVD.

The SVCD specification does support hotspot areas that can be clicked. The problem is that very few players support this feature.
