I am trying to convert a AVI file to SVCD MPG format but have been unsuccessful. I am using TMPGENC to do the conversion. Everytime I do it the VIDEO is fine however there is no sound. I initially tried the AVI file in DIVX format. I then re-converted via VIRTUALDUB using HUFFY codec, same result.
I then installed ffdshow (I saw other posts regarding this) but same thing.
I used both "default" settings within TMPGENC for the conversion - SVCD and SVCDfilm, no difference.
I have used TMPGENC to do SVCD conversions before altho I believe I used a "Fast Motion" compression from VIRTUALDUB (dont remember exact title).
I would rather not have to convert my DIVX files multiple times just to burn them to SVCD. any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

What AUdio codec is used for the audio in the source avi. (Use virtualdub File-File Information, or better still G-Spot to determine this). If it is Ac3 or VBR mp3 you will have to do some further processing of the audio before encoding with TmpGenc.

OK, thnaks. I had actually already exported the audio as WAV from within VIRTUALDUB and attempted to "multiplex" this back into the the MPG file that TMPGENC had created but of course got an error "invalid DVD format" or some such error. I do have GoldWave. What settings/filetype should I export the WAV file to from GoldWave to make it compatible for TMPGENC?
If I find that the audio is encoded as Ac3 or VBR mp3 is there no other solution other than to re-encode the audio? I will do whatever is needed to get the file to SVCD but I would prefer for any future issues that the amount of encoding/ re-encoding be reduced as much as possible. Is there perhaps an additional codec to use to prevent this or perhaps a different process than TMPGENC that will allow me to convert direct from teh current DIVX to SVCD-MPG in one step?

I dont recall if I had tried both to multiplex AND use the WAV as the audio source on the initial convert, or if I had just tried to multiplex. (I am not currently at my home pc to try). Would it not also require a "dvd format" audio source on the initial convert just like the multiplex? or would it convert the audio source appropriately?

If the audio is AC3, and you plan on authoring as DVD, you should extract the AC3 (VirtualDub, Audio -> Direct Stream Copy -> Save Wav, rename output.wav to output.ac3, run thru ac3fix) then encode video only (with TMPGEnc) then author with m2v from TMPGEnc as video source/asset and .ac3 as audio source/asset
AC3 is already DVD compliant, so no need to do anything about it.

So then, when using TMPGENC for converting AVI --> MPG instead of using just the AVI file for both the AUDIO and VIDEO inputs, I can extract the WAV using VIRTUALDUB (no conversions needed, just export???) and then set the AVI for the VIDEO IN and the WAV for the AUDIO IN? And that should - hopefully - solve the problem of the missing audio in the MPG output?
<< assuming of course, which I will validate, that the audio is not already Ac3 or VBR mp3>>
I will try that when I return home.

SVCD audio standard is 44.1khz @ 224 mp2(mpa), DVD is 48khz @ anything (wav.ac3.mp2)....avi 's (d/x) dont care about the audio rate.
Convert the audio in a audio app to 48khz (try ffmeggui..its quick) -
