Another reason to migrate to Linux. Name one other company in the world that threatens and harasses customers like this.

So they make you validate, but then they claim that it can't be used to track down someone... riiiiight

Whatever the reason is, they're apparently making all customers participate in this. IMO, this is akin to doing a strip search of everyone passing through the airport as an anti-terrorism measure. Or maybe requiring a fingerprint and DNA sample as you enter a store, so they'll be sure to catch shoplifters.

P.S. If they disallow critical updates for people who haven't "validated" they may be opening themselves to lawsuits as well... i.e. from valid customers who (for whatever reason) decide they don't want to go through the procedure, and end up losing data cuz they can't patch security holes.

I guess it's been too long since MS has actively generated bad will in the PC community, they must be bored and longing for a fresh wave of hatred...

i guess you dont own OSX , where you have to pay for all patchs ....

as for airports -- i guess you dont fly much as i got horror stories ..

ms is not the only one doing this -- many companies are going this route .... they could just start charging for updates like many many other companies are doing ..

Nope... do you really have to pay for all patches? Remind me never to buy a Mac.

If they wanted to charge for non security related updates like Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, MSIE, etc. that'd be fine with me... I'd either pay, or get a competing product. But if they started charging for critical fixes, IMO it would be high time to dump Windows altogether.

P.S. very cool avatar, freaks me out tho..

    what makes you say that.

  14. It will probably follow that the majority of folks who dislike this situation with MS will move to Linux, or continue with older MS products not requiring the Anti Piracy. If there is a way to reverse engineer it with IDA Pro, it will be done.

  16. They say security issues will still be patched for everyone, only non-critical updates will be covered by this. They know better than to risk leaving even more unpatched machines available for hackers to attack than there are already!

in the desktop market -- linux is not even a player, even macs are twice as many ...

but in the server market - it sure is A player .. but server distro 's are not now often free either, and require costly service packages (same as sun) .

bug's right -- a lot of people here missed the point that security patches will be for everyone -- as is the policy now ..

As long as your software is legitimate, there shouldn't be any problems. M$ doesn't want to know who you are and probably doesn't care beyond you purchasing their products.

You mean that it's kind of strange how many people that ask about EVERY single option of CCE and Scenarist didn't get the manual when they "bought" it?

Okay. Let me get this straight.

Used to be when you bought a new computer system (full up), you received hardware AND the media of the software that came with it.

I know that some companies (all? certainly HP, I know) now don't even supply a [set of] rescue disk when you purchase a complete system. The user is relying on a partition (with the rescue s/w) on the only hard drive they get for fixing their system. If they know how to do that.

This was all performed in order to reduce/eliminate piracy.

    Didn't work did it?

So when will it be when we are forced to all have "constant on" internet hookups and leave our computers on all the time so the manufacturers can police the stuff that we legitimately own?

Last I checked, I don't work for them, nor live in their neighborhood.

that was done to reduce cost - not to "reduce/eliminate piracy" ..

Apple doesn't charge for security updates or bug fixes. It is true that they update the OS every 12 to 18 months which is a paid upgrade, but you get hundreds of new features and enhancements. This is similar to going from Win 98 to Win ME, for which Microsoft customers also pay.

A point release like the upcoming tiger 10.4 is equivalent to going from Win 98 to Win ME, for which Microsoft also charges. The Apple equivalent of a service patch would be like going from 10.3.5 to 10.3.6 which is a free upgrade.

So you have to give them your Win Product keys, the name of your pc manufacturer, and tell them which os you are running, before you can download an update? I don't see what the big deal is.
