  1. I happened to be in an Office Max the other night and took a look at the media shelf to see if there were any DVD-RW sales. Not only were there no sales, there was no DVD-RW at all.

I asked the store techie what the deal was and he non-chalantly informed me that DVD+RW was replacing DVD-RW and the store wasn't going to carry DVD-RW any more. When I told him I owned a DVD-RW recorder he just said I was "going to have a hard time finding media for it". Have a nice day.

This is the first of I've heard of this, and am a bit worried as I own not one, but two DVD recorders that require the DVD-RW format.

Should I go out and stockpile all the DVD-RW I can get my hands on before this alleged "replacement" takes place?

Is there any truth to this at all ???

  2. The employees at Office Max have a combined IQ of less than 100. I don't believe DVD-RW is going to disappear anytime soon.

they're probably getting rid of DVD-RW because Office Max was bought out by BOISE CASCADE which is getting rid of old inventory. that's what i was told by a Office Max manager when they were no longer going to carry FUJI brand of DVD MEDIA. they had clearance price of $5.00 for a box of 10 FUJI TAIYO YUDEN 4x speed DVD-R last year.

The OfficeMax employee is an idiot. All mouth, no facts ... like most salesman in no-education-required stores.

They are just not carrying them at that store anymore. The OfficeMax here still stocks DVD-RW, but it's crap off-brand stuff, which is how they are moving their stock there days. Memorex and lots of other low-end stuff.

Office Depot and Staples still carry good media.

"RW" formats have always been stocked in smaller quantities, CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW ... always. It's not so much that stores "carry less", but rather they are carrying more write-once, and in more speed options (2x, 4x, 8x, 16x).

  9. Thanks for all the feedback. I feel better, but there must be at least some truth to the alleged death of DVD-RW, because it does in fact seem to be getting harder and harder to find.

I'm not taking any chances. Let the stockpile begin!

  11. I was adding a 120 GB HDD to a friends computer and I sent a him to Best Buy to get a Hard drive cable, you know the ribbon type, PATA. An employee there told him there that they stopped making them and that it wouldn't work on a new drive anyway, as all the new drives are the new standard, SATA.

I just wanted people to see how stupid store employees are and never trust them with what they try to tell you or sell you. Talk with someone that knows as they do know shit, they just tell you something to try to con you or to try to get you to buy something else.

Why do they let morons work in computer stores.

It's funny you can find ultra ata and ultradma drives all over Fry's Electronics, and you can find the cables there too. What a concept.

I thought they stopped making "Chico Sticks" a few years ago. Did I go out and buy up all I could find? No, I just found another store that carried them.

I remember I once applied at a computer store and received a letter telling me that my knowledge and qulifications did not match what they were looking for. I'm no computer ubergeek but I know my fair share.
One day I went in, (overall it's a good store with a great return policy) looking for a PSU and a saleman asked me if I needed any help. I asked about the peak output of one of the PSUs and after hemming and hawing for a few minutes reached over and "recommended" one. I looked at the price and it was simply the most expensive one. Of course he didn't waste any time putting his ID sticker on the box to make sure he got his commission. Needless to say I went home with no PSU, went online and got it.
Another friend had recently received a DVD burner but could not get past 0.7X . Looked at the laptop config, and although it was newer the USB port were 1.1, I recommended the store and told him to get a USB 2.0 card and then come over. When he did he told me that a saleman came over and offered to help. He was already going to buy a card for $30 which had 2 ports but said the saleman was getting on his case about buying a 6 port for $99. Kept on hammering away about how he should just spend the money now for future expansion. Fortunately my friend didn't budge until the salesman finally just walked away.
With few exceptions salespeople are there because they can move products and con unknowing customers with b.s. They're just looking out at lining their own pockets
It didn't seem to be so bad before but lately I do all my homework by either going online or asking people who do know.

  15. Yep, most of these "brick & mortar" sales folk either want to just make a commission or get you out of their face if you're looking at a small-ticket item like media.

Well, I'm not taking any chances on the DVD-RW well drying up. I just bought 15 spindles of Verbatim DVD-RW 15pk - 4.7 GB storage media for $14.71/spindle FREE Shipping, NO Tax.

ummmm.......OFFICE MAX was bought by BOISE CASCADE which cleared out all the leftover inventory that OFFICE MAX had......i never said they don't carry DVD-RW.......i merely stated they put the FUJI DVD-R on clearance price because of the take over by BOISE CASCADE...... :P

i agree that OFFICE MAX now sells crappy media which is probably because BOISE CASCADE now owns them....
