I am looking for a new program to replace the disk-scanning tool that is included in Windoze XP. The main reason being the iffy power in this place seems utterly determined to destroy my computer. I want to scan my hard drives and see how much damage has already been done. Are there any programs here that one would recommend?

First, I would get a decent UPS. This will help somewhat with the power situation.
To scan your disks, just get the tools supplied by the HD manufacturer.Google is your Friend -
Get a UPS which gets connected to the PC through the serial port (RS232C). Load the monitoring s/w which comes with the UPS. When power fails the UPS will send a signal to the PC and it will shutdown before the UPS also goes off.
When I was born I was so shocked that I could'nt speak for 18 months.
