  5. Read up on the tmpgenc problems. There's a sticky at the top of the Newbie Conversion forum. Lots of ways to fix your avi so tmpgenc will use it.

Use Virtuldub (any flavour) and under VIDEO direct processing select the FRAMERATE option.

Keep the SOURCE the same (dont touch it) and then on the FRAME RATE CONVERSION select the desired fps (on the right..CONVERT TO FPS and type in your new framerate...eg 25fps < for PAL Tv's>)

Depending on make and model, digital camera movie files are usually MJPEG in a MOV or AVI wrapper. You will need the MJPEG codec. I still have this on my todo list since Christmas to edit files from my new Canon S60. Here is the state of my first pass research.

Quicktime Pro is supposed to support MJPEG I'm told.

For TMPGENC I'm told these work:

    PicVideo

    Morgan-Multimedia http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/technicalsV3.htm

    Quicktime Reader plug-in for TMPGEnc

Movie Maker 2 and Windows Media Encoder 9 are supposed to work with QuickTime Pro installed or QuickTime Alternative
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... native.cfm installed

    Another lead
    RAD Video tools.

Raw info that may be useful to you. Let me know what works to save me some work.

  8. TMPGEnc did it, after adjusting VFAPI plug-in in enviromental setting, just pump the Direct show multimedia file reader to the top. It was in one of the tip at the link provided.

I still have another problem, trying to convert a wmv file that can be played with windows media player. The above trick does not work, any tips?

  9. Unless filesize is a real issue (and therefore you want to use a lot of compression), I wouldn't bother with WMV - it's a proprietary format which virtually no standalone DVD players etc.. support, so you're limiting what you can do with the file.

Use TMPGEnc to convert it to MPEG (1 or 2) and then the file will play on a variety of platforms. Windows Media Player can play MPEG1 out of the box, and MPEG2 if you have DVD software (PowerDVD / WinDVD) or an MPEG2 codec installed.

    just my tuppence...

  10. I have to deal with wmv files because it was downloaded in such format, I am trying to convert it to other format. TMPGEnc does not work, it says file not supported.

    Any one can offer help?

  11. sorry mate, I misread your post; I didn't see that you wanted to convert from WMV.

It's quite tricky to get from WMV to anything else, but here's a few things you might try:

    * Virtualdub 1.4c-ASF can support some of M$'s video codecs (the developer was forced to remove support for them in later versions)

    * ASFTools can convert many M$ files into AVI's using other codecs.

    * As far as I recall, Windows Movie Maker can output as DV-AVI of some sort, which may be of some use.

All of the above tools are free, so you can try any or all of them.

In general, it is not easy to convert from WMV to anything though - so good luck.

    theDruid.

  12. Just remembered - I don't think you can use Windows Movie Maker 2 unless you're running Windows XP, and it looks like you're on 98, so no luck there.

It's not freeware, but EO Video seems to be able to convert anything, if you're stuck.

    cheers,

To confirm, I highly recommend EO Video to convert WMV files to AVI. So far, this is the only tool I've used that manages to keep the audio in sync during such conversions.
