Saying i buy a harddrive recorder, if i copy programmes that are 2hrs 20min to the hardrive, will it be copied at full quality, then transfer that to that to the dvd disc, is that one benefit of HD, or am i totally wrong, what benefits would buying a HD give me.

I can't speak for all DVD Recorders, but I can talk about the Pioneer 420 & 520 (with DV). Both will record up to 2hr 20min @ 720x480. (The next "notch" down is 352x480.)
One of the advanatges of having a DVD Recorder with a hard drive is being able to edit out portions of video (TV commercials). Another is the ability to set precise chapters.
Got to the pioneer web site and download the owners manual for the 520 (the 420 is also included in this manual. Then check it over.

Right now costco online has the 420 on sale $250. (If you're not a member it will cost 5% more.)

NOTE: Costco is not an authorized seller of Pioneer. That means the Pioneer warranty is void. Instead Costco offers a full refund (within 1 year) if the unit goes bad.
JVC also makes fine equipment. Unfortunately I don't have any links...
Good luck!
