ROME (Reuters) - An Italian restaurant that sold a pizza with a human tooth baked into the crust has been fined nearly $4,000 for a lack of hygiene.
"It's insanity," cried defense lawyer Massimiliano Manzo, who represented the Florence pizzeria.
"How is the owner of the pizzeria going to force employees to go to the dentist every day or strap a lid over their mouths?" he told Reuters by telephone.
The unidentified client discovered the tooth while chewing a mouthful of pizza in December 2000. He paid the bill, but refused a complimentary supper to patch things over and instead took legal action.
The owner of the tooth was never identified and Manzo refused to discuss how it got into the pizza in the first place.
The lawyer said he would appeal.

Did you hear the story about somebody finding a finger in their Pepsi can? Is that a true story?
-
There was a needle in a Pepsi can, but I never heard about a finger in one. The needle was intentionally put there by a worker, and never made it to consumers as some have claimed. It was caught on camera and was found by quality inspection. Apparently quality inspection found it because the machine detected the weight was off and rejected it.
Stuff like this happens here and there. It's really very very rare when it happens at all. Major food chains take heat because they are so large that media and lawyers love it. Think of how many thousands of other have eaten pizza there without a tooth. If more people had it, I'm sure the workers would all look like toothless grannys. -
I found a plastic knife baked into a slice of pizza once(I didn't eat any part of it). They gave me my money back and new slice...I felt so much better.

That's fairly common. It's even happened at schools. At a high school here, recently there was a report of a metal fork baked into the main lunch menu item. There were security cameras in the kitchen area that show that a silverware tray removed from the dishwasher lost a fork in the food mix accidentally. It was not observed by the cook. They were looking in the other direction as the fork fell out, while the tray was being placed out front for students to take silverware. Nothing was charged and the student was given a second lunch and gets free lunches for the rest of the school year as an apology. That's a pretty good deal towards the student for a proven accident.
