  1. -recorded a short clip with NeroVisionExpress (DV Type-2)

-tried to open in VirtualDub and recieved this message:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DVSD' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

    What do I do?

Nero's pdf help says it uses DirectShow codecs, and Virtual Dub does not support the use of those codecs. Maybe VDub didn't want to pay Microsoft royalties. DirectShow supports constant bit rate only(which is why the Windows Media Player won't play most mp4's). Nero's software is probably using vbr for better compression. Installing the DivX 3.11 codecs may solve the problem. They are hacked codecs with MS sigs to fool Windows. They might fool VDub too.

TheWinDV home page for downloads says WinDV uses DirectShow filters. So you will have the same problem.

Try installing the Panasonic DV codec, if you don't have it.

  6. So, what do I need to do to be able to edit my avi. files in VirtualDub? Capture with VirtualDub? That sounded problematic/difficult to set up.

What editor is there that does accept DirectShow filters?

  7. You might want to have a look at the entry for dvsd at fourcc.org.

It would suggest to me that you don't have the right DV codec installed.

What does gSpot say about your AVI file? It should tell you about what codecs you have on your system for DV.

    cheers,
    theDruid.
