  1. My friend lend me an avi file, It is encoded in WMV3, window media video9. It giving problem during playback in my window media player10 as well as the core media player.

I try to use Virtualdub to convert to DivX or Xvid, however it give me a warning upon opening the file, saying, that it cannot be proccess, can only direct stream copy. I try avisynth, avidemux, DivFix, DivRepair, all are unsucessful. Please advise.

  3. I've been using an app called Video Cleaner (river past) to convert WMV8 and ASF to xvid and it works great (perfect a/v sync). I haven't tried WMV9 with it yet though. I've converted WMV9 to avi with TMPGenc though and it worked well.

    TMPGenc cannot open the file.

I use this to convert WMV to AVI (using HufyUV), editable and better quality for conversion.

  6. maybe you should try Stoik Video Converter, you can just whatever output depending on the codec installed on your pc (eg divx/mp3 or divx/anything???)

or you can try winavi to convert it to mpeg(divx doesn't work for me just a corrupted avi file)

Earlier versions of virtualdub can open WMVs (1.3c was the last version AFAIK).

What error did you get when in virtualdub ? Can you post a screenshot of it ? Also, I'm not sure what's going on with your file. Can you post a GSpot pic of it ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  12. Looking at the screenshots reminded me of something that may help...

    Windows Media Video 9 VCM

The Video Compression Manager (VCM) version of the Windows Media Video 9 codec enables earlier versions of encoding and editing applications to support the Windows Media Video 9 codec in file containers such as Audio Video Interleaved (AVI).
Legacy support for Video For Windows!

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/codecs/vcm.aspx

Be sure to check out the VCM FAQs.

I installed it once, a while back, and never spent enough time learning how to encode with it. But it may enable you to open your WMV file and export to DivX as you want.

If you have no success with the latest version of VirtualDub then definately try the earlier 1.3C (or is it 13C?).

ASFTools may be worth a look too - although i think you'd still need the WMV9 VCM installed.

    Good luck.

    Martin.
