I like almost all of his stuff, but that one stands out

2001: A Space Odyssey made every science fiction film before it look very pale by comparison ... and more than a few SF films that came after it as well. I'm amazed at the pre-computer special effects brought to bear in that film every time I watch it.

My second vote would go for "The Shining" being a King fan from way back I can tell you that and "The Green Mile" are the only two movies that were adapted well for the screen. The rest are trash.

The Shining was excellent, but I thought this adaptation was better.

I remember working the graveyard shift by myself one night, and booted up one of the computers I had to use. "Suddenly, out of nowhere, I here HAL's voice say, "I'm sorry, I can't do that, Dave." Freaked me out for a moment, as one of the dayshifters had programmed it do that on start up.

    So was Green Mile.

The quote implied that Green Mile and Shining were the only two good King works to be adapted well for the screen. I disagree.

  22. I saw an interview where King himself was not pleased with Kubrick's version. That the mini series mentioned above was how he had visioned/intended it. I have read the book, and the mini series was definately a better adaptation. I still enjoy watching Kubrick's version, as I own it on DVD (actually got 'em both on DVD).

But the editing in 2001 is most brilliant...I didn't vote for it though 'cause it's an extremely boring movie.

The other Kubrick movies don't do much for me (sorry, not my cup of tea)

You don't hear people rave over Barry Lyndon much

I think one of the troubles in adapting any movie to book is it's hard to cram a 800 page book into 1 1/2 hours. Take for example the DArk Tower series from King which is my favorite. Even making that a mini series for TV would be impossible without hacking much of the intricasies out of the entire series. You could probably make 2 to 3 movies from each book x 7 or ? books. I'm still on four never got around to the fianl chapter and don't want to buy one just for that. Guess I'll have to break down and spend the $8 so I can continue the "Quest".

Known for his exorbitant shooting ratio and endless takes, he reportedly exposed an incredible 1.3 million feet of film while shooting The Shining (1980), the release print of which runs for 142 minutes. Thus, he used less than 1% of the exposed film stock, making his shooting ratio an indulgent 102:1 when a ratio of 5 or 10:1 is considered the norm.

he also used a lot of different aspect ratios - often even in the same movie ..
