  1. I have 2 units, a Philips DVD player (to play PAL recordings) and a Panasonic DMR-E30 (?) recorder to record DVDs. Ideally, I'd like to consolidate these 2 units into one.

Is there a DVD recorder out there that can play back PAL DVDs? I'm not concerned about recording in PAL, or region hacking (although that would be nice). It would also be ideal if it had coaxial digital audio b/c my a/v receiver has only 1 TOSLINK input and 1 Coaxial Input, and my HD Tivo is already using the TOSLINK.

    Thanks,
    Brad

Usually if you are going to play PAL DVDs you will need a region hack because most PAL DVDs are region 2.

If you want a preconfigured unit (expensive and not recomended) you could get one in here: http://www.110220volts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?page=110220volts/PROD/DVDRecorder/DVDHARDDRIVE

Again, I would not recommend it because these guys charge too much for a free hack. In Walmart you will find the un-hacked version for $278 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3168469

Check for the region-free hack in here: http://www.ss3f.com/ilo/

The model without a hard disk should work the same and it’s a lot cheaper.

Since the iLO is a ravaged Liteon unit I think the LVW-5005, with the region hack should also work, but I do not know where to find this hack.

  3. I actually get a lot of PAL DVD-Rs with TV shows recorded by friends in Australia and England and the like, so they never have the region encoding, although a hack is always good to have.

What's the reliability of that unit like?

  5. Thanks for the replies. Is this the only recorder that has PAL/NTSC conversion? I don't mind paying a little extra for a more reliable recorder.

    Thanks

Actually after the last firmware upgrade, this unit should be pretty stable. On the other hand I’m not aware of other recorders with PAL/NTSC conversion.

Because of some advertising, the Artec DR-RE12A will provably be able to play PAL movies, but I cannot confirm it. Anyway this is a link I have found for it: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DR-RE12A&cat=CON

I have a Panasonic DMR-E55 that I bough in Panama some time ago. This unit is the Latin American version and I could be configured for PAL or NTSC. In PAL MODE it would only play PAL movies. In NTSC mode it would only play NTSC movies. Since my TV is NTSC this feature is useless for me.

    Good luck in your search.

  7. I read through the extensive ILo posts on here and couldn't find any info on DVD-R playback. How is that on this box?

Regarding the coaxial digital output, I though I needed that as well until I walked into a Radio Shack store and saw a coaxial/optical converter for about $20 (maybe less; I don't remember). It converts either way: from optical to coaxial or from coaxial to optical. I have the optical output from my Pioneer connected to the coaxial input on my receiver using this device and it works perfectly.

I have the LiteON 5045 and you can see my complete thoughts on what I am experiencing with my unit in my other thread. I bought mine from the "expensive guys" because I have the understanding that I can record and playback PAL on a NTSC TV because of the chipset modification makes it better that way and its Region free too. I trying to get my Cousin from Australia to send me some DVDs to really put it to the test. It only been a short time since I got the unit but it been almost flawless so far. My unit has a Coax Out I dont think its a in.
