Other than having video/sound inputs is there anything else that differenciates an AIW vs. a regular card? Like, is there hardware encoding or is it software? If there is hardware how does it compare to a VIVO card that uses only software encoding?

The new AIW cards love macrovision, the VIVO is far more tolerant of it.
Case in point: I tried to capture, a purchased tape, using the 9800 AIW card. The result was classic macrovision-flickering screen-variable brightness. As I have two computers, the other one with the 64 VIVO card, I tried to capture the same movie with it-no problems. No flickering or brightness variation.
That's a real difference. However, I capture using my DVR (JVC DR-10S) and it is much better, as I have a stabilizer connected to it to kill macrovision. Facet Clarifier, a vendor of stabilizers/clarifiers told me their unit does not work with new AIW cards. I assume the same may be true for other vendors. That is why I say AIW loves macrovision.
