  1. I recently recieved a 51in. toshiba widescreen tv with HDMI inputs, I seen that toshiba offers a dvd player with this connection type. My question is, will it upconvert the picture quality to hd quality on a 4.6gb dvdr or is the hdmi connection even hd-dvd?

Your HDTV should accept a DVD player's 480i or 480p output over component analog and produce very good results. It will usually offer you the option of direct 480p display or some form of upconversion to the HDTV's native display.

If you get a HDMI output DVD player, it will either output in the digital form of 480p or "upconvert" to 1080i. This dosen't mean the image quality will be any better, more likely it will be worse since the 1080i upconversion will then be downconvertered at the HDTV to its native resolution (typ. 1450x1080 or less).

HDMI outputs from a DVD player are more about interconnect flexibility than picture quality.
