  1. Hey guys i'm a big anime fan and i just recently found out that you can burn a dvd as .avi's and fit about 20-25 episodes a dvd. rather then the method i do now. which only gets me 3-4 per dvd because i burn as movie with chapters. Well now i want to learn how everythign works. Like just the general idea. And a dvd player to go with. I've read from some members on the site that a philips player would be best that ranges to 80USD. and i have to encode to divx. i've also read a lot of problems people are having with the sound and what not. I would like to learn some tips to keep me from making the same mistakes as others. I have knowedgle in ripping encoding burning dvd's vcd's cd's, so i'm not a complete noob. but i dont understnad the lingo that goes around.

i was at bestbuy and the only player that have divx was a JVC xv-np-10s but i heard its an older player with an older divx codec. therefore creating problems. thanks guys for the help in advance.

    For the dvd-642:
The audio for your divx files should be mp3. PCM won't work and takes too much room anyway. Keep the video bitrate under 2200kbs. I use no more than 1800kbs but 900 to 1200 is more common.
I just burn them in dvd-udf mode with Nero but iso seems to work too. Close the disc don't use multi session and since the player only shows 12 characters (or so) in the menu even though the disc can hold more in the fd make sure the lead characters are meaningful.

  4. i'm a little lost. you gave me the configs and what not. but i dont understnad the first statement on the mp3 and PCM. What software if are you refering too?

i understood the bottom statement as well. with the whole UDF stuff.

    Edit
I just learned that you convert to divx, here i am thinking you gotta use .avi
i assume now i just gotta follow this link, https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm

thereafter i shouldn't run into any trouble. But what about the player. I'm not asking for what is the best but what are some reputable names for dvd players that play divx i dont want no name stuff where the laser will crap out on me in 2 months or something like that. Philips seems to be a solid brand from what i see in the forums. But playback issues with audio, Now i'm just trying to figure out which series of Philips should i go about getting.

When I say Mp3 and pcm, I refer to the audio format of your movie clip. The dvp-642 will not play avi with pcm (uncompressed audio) but will play the audio properly if you encode it with an mp3 codec (officially mpeg1 layerIII).

avi2divx although catchy is a poor choice of terms. Avi is the container or box that the video sits in and divx is one of the many codecs you can use to encode (or compress) the video.
The avi extension is what the Philips dvp-642 expects to see. Not a file called filename.divx. I t should be filename.avi.
The dvp-642 can play avi encoded with an mpeg4 simple profile codec. That includes the microsoft mpeg4 codecs, the divx 3x, divx 4x and divx 5x codecs and also the xvid codec when the video is encoded with a simple profile.
There are many choices of programs used to encode the video two which you may be familiar are are DR. Divx and Virtualdub but they are only 2 in a long list of programs that can convert (or capture) your video depending on your source material.
I use the Philips dvp-642 as an example because that is what I own and can't speak for any other divx certified players. When you read previous posts you have to be careful because many old issues which were raised originally have been resolved by understanding the player better.

  6. yea when i found the how-to for the V=dub i realized what you was refering to in reguards to mp3 and pcm. i fully understand that part. thanks for the help. i got what i needed. i still have 1 more issue. but the topic was mention in that one thread on how not to post or osmething like that

i need some help picking up my new player. i do like some of the philips models. u've mentioned the 642 model. and that most problems are just user issues and if they did it the right way they wouldn't have the problem. which i understand fully. are all the 600 series that phlips made divx players. So i should just aim for Divx label on the box right? kinda like if i wanted a VCD player i should aim for the VCD label. Is there any one i can get at my local bestbuy or circuitcity thanks for the help once again. have a happy new years btw
