What kind of MP4 and what kind of AVI? They both come in many flavors. I would put the MP4 into AVIcodec or Gspot and give us the results. As to AVI there are, XVID, DIVX, Huffy, etc. Also a lot of types.

Generally, try to open the file in Virtualdub or VDmod. If you can open it, you can usually use VD to convert to other types of AVI.

MP4UI can demux an MP4 into avi and aac streams. AVIMUX can multiplex it into a DIVX but you need to convert the aac audio to mp3.

Guess it depends if it is ASP or h.264/AVC. MP4UI can't handle AVC and in fact I don't think that it is currently possible to remux AVC from mp4 to avi.

AVIMuxGUI supports aac in avi just fine by the way.

mencoder should be able to remux the video (not AVC) to an avi whilst re-encoding the audio to mp3 if that is what you want to do.

Should also point out that it is quite possible that the mp4 uses mp3 audio anyway. Could also be say vorbis as a private stream.
