Problems converting MP4 to AVI

Hi!
I'm trying to convert an MP4 file to AVI format.
I have tried using ffmpegx but when it converts it the new avi file is only about 60kb in size and not around 350mb as it should be. When I play the avi file in VLC it only lasts about 3 second and i get no video and just a short bleep of sound!
I have looked at the forum on here but need detailed settings for the conversion.

I have also tried 'Handbrake' but it won't even recognise the mp4 file.

Any help would be much appreciated

Well you Mac-Folks ought to say so in the original post. It would prevent a lot of useless answers. I'd suggest AVIDeMux as a possible converter. Does the original file play in VLC? If it does there are ways to convert using VLC too.

Sorry for not mentioning my os.... Tho I did fill in the details when I registered today and being a newbie I went straight to the newbie forum!

The file does play in VLC - I have tried transcoding it in VLC but it wont do it directly to AVI
Also tried downloading AVIDeMux but my os is too old for it

I will repost on the Mac forum.
