So i just got an ipod and i have been converting some of my avis and i want to know if there is a program that converts them the same quality but doesn't make it much bigger then what it already is. If that is possible it would be great to know a program that will do it.

  2. Hi,

FYI "same quality" is impossible for when you convert formats
    (unless its a lossless codec)

Other free methods include videora, and ripbot264

okay i have been using flv to avi mpeg converter and it is alright but it has only a few quality options, low, medium, high, superb and it just doesn't give enough options with high it is okay quality but it takes about a third of the file size off so i want more quality that i would bet with the superb but that almost doubles it.. so i just want one where you can customize the quality more so i can get it the right size. but i figured you probably couldn't get the same quality without increasing the size. i will try videora and look at that other thread. ty for the help guys.

Quality is dependent on the source and the bitrate, mostly. You also have to accept that regardless, compressing a video that has already been compressed with yet another lossy codec, will reduce quality.

If you are converting Youtube or similar clips, even so-called HQ clips, 1000 kbps should give you as good as the source. 1000kbps will convert a 700MB avi file to an iPod compatible file of approx. the same size. 1500 kbps will convert a 1400MB avi file to slightly larger than source.
